A friend of mine is buying a new computer and does not have the time or desire to build one himself. So I thought to myself that I would ask where to go for him. Dell is low on the list due to no AMD and the latest NVidia. This is going to be a high end 2-3k computer. So where to go for the best? Thanks

I'd actually recommend going ABS.. Alienware seems a little pricy for some reason.. you could get a monster out of this ABS config by pushing it from the standard $2000 to whatever you wanted to..
On this ABS model, it's AMD's. If you want Intel, ABS also makes Intel computers. They make SLI systems standard. Dual core 4400+ with SLI Geforce 7800 GT's under $3000. Not to mention 2 gig RAM, 250 gig 7200 RPM HD and a TV tuner..

There's no such thing as a good pre-built PC.

DON'T GET ALIENWARE!!!!!!!!

Now, this is a big blanket statement - however.. I have an Alienware laptop for work, have 4 co-workers with Alienware laptops, and I know one guy with an Alienware PC. Every single one of us had problems with our systems, and all of us were just horrified at the lack of help/competence from Alienware. In fact, for 3 of us with the laptops, they were simply defective and were randomly shutting down, or not turning on - and when we sent them back for service- they told us there was nothing wrong with them.. and sent them back to us untouched!!!!!!!!! We had to send them back again.. then all of us STILL have problems and issues with these things. I HATE Alienware now - please don't throw your money away on one! The only thing good about Alienware is that they look sorta cool.

If I had to choose between a Dell and an Alienware, I'd get a Dell in a second.

Don't go Alienware.
My Alienware system had no problems with what they shipped, but they neglected to send me my UPS, case key, and some software. I never got them. I just stopped dealing with them.

ABS seems like a good choice.

i love my alienware notebook, but i really dont like their customer service, i wouldn't get alienware. I also have an older dell and i hate their customer service as well. the dell desktop was ok when i got it but it seriously lacked upgradability which is why i'm finally building one. go with what these guys said, ABS

I think HP/Compaq has great prices and great service, alike. Gateway is nice, too, but a little over-priced. Dell has some good deals--sometimes better than HP--but I've heard terrible things about their service, not to mention the quality of their components. Emachines supposedly are very nice and inexpensive, but you can't custom-configure them.

My suggestion would be to go HP/Compaq. Stay away from Dell unless you can't afford anything else.

for 2500 you can get
830 D, 2 7800 gtxs, 2 gig of ram, 2 160's in raid 0, media center/2 tuners. Not to mention for 666 more a new 2405 so you can actually use those gtx's

But obviously your giving up processing power when compared to an amd system. What do yall think?

Is that price before or after the $19 shipping + $122 tax?

Why does everyone keep comparing the Pentium D to the Athlon X2? They're in completely different price ranges.

Put a Pentium D 820 up against an Athlon 64 3700+ or 3800+. For media center purposes, I'd say the D is a better choice.

Because that's what they're made to compete against.. Dual-core vs. Dual core.

Pentium D vs. 3700+ or 3800+ = Apples to Oranges.
