Indeed.

I bet AMD's capacity for CPU's in a year is how many P4's are shipped in dell manchines.

The 'fairly good technology' quote makes me laugh. The Dell designers must have a hard time keeping Prescott and 6800/X800 systems cool and quiet.

My Dell (P4 2.0A) runs relatively cool and very quiet. The HD seek is about as loud as all of the fans combined.

I don't think they have to work very hard at all. If you know what you're working with and read the Intel manuals, you'll be fine. If you have a prescott and have temps too high, chances are your case doesn't have a shroud.

My 3.4GHz Prescott 540J and GeForce 6800 combo runs incredibly quiet as well.

I realize that shrouds can be extremely useful, but those systems will still run hotter if put in the same type of cooling setup as a Northwood or A64/6800 or X800 type system.

I am only saying that the case/cooling designers could save a decent amount of work by using A64s. Also, they would work nicely in the HTPC area, which Dell really should try to expand into.

Offering Opterons for servers would also be a great opportunity to increase sales/

actually, AMD just began running 65nm silicon in fab 36 in dresden. Once this moves to full production, I imagine AMD will have a great deal of additional capacity. Also, IBM and Chartered are both set to start production as well. It is entirely possible that if AMD's dual cores end up being superior to Intel's (they will kick the crap out of a Pentium D, since all of netburst's advantages (hyperthreading, multitasking performance, SSE3, etc.) will be gone, but we'll have to see how they fare against Yonah), then Dell will pick AMD up when this additional capacity is opened up. The way Dell is talking, it's all or nothing for them - they don't want two suppliers. They want one supplier who gives them great deals. Basically, if AMD is in, then Intel will have to be out. Of course, I'm sure Intel would just give Dell its chips for free before it would give up like 25% of the PC marketshare to its archrival.

I can't think of very many large computer manufactorers such as Gateway, HP, Dell that actually use AMD extensively. I know my dad just recently bought a new HP laptop with a 3400+, but I don't think they have any in their desktops...

If you don't mind a giant radiator in your computer then the new Dell's are great. I can only begin to imagine what the Pentium D coolers in a Dell will look like.

As was already stated, "not this shiat again!"

Well, considering the normal Dell customer......I'd say no, they wouldn't mind because less than 5% of them will/would ever open the case! LOL! FWIW though, Dell does have it down good......their new systems with the 775's run cool and for that matter, so did the Preshott 478's. I don't particularly like much of anything else about them, but, that part they have right.

As for Dell/AMD......I really tend to doubt we'll see it very soon if at all and if we do.....it will be high end work satations with Opteron D/C and even then it will be awhile. Dell will take time to configure and test a system they will market.....especially their first AMD system so no matter what......if they agreed tomorrow.....I'd bet 6 months until we saw the first system.....JMO

I agree Dell pulls this shite every year to extort more money from uits pimp (Intel)...As far as I am concerned they could go out of business...F them!!!!

Also I truly do believe that AMD has issues with fab space and capacity so this always leads to an easy way out for Dell, by saying AMD couldn't supply them enough cpus....

AMD IMO is a poorly managed company. If they pulled their heard out they probably would have gained and held market share in the last 3-4 years instead of what they actually did. Great cpus for many years now and not much to show for it now versus then.

IMO all reasons while they will be second fiddle for along time regardless of their products superiority. Heck if IBM \truly wanted a piece of this market AMD would be third....

Their marketing department consists of a drunk Randy Quaid (I think that is his name) from Independence Day I agree but their hereforto limited foundry capability (they have cross license agreements with Intel in which only 25 or 30% of their chips can be made by independent foundries) has been the real showstopper. Big business is where they are aiming and that is a consertative slow to change bunch. When Dresden at 65nm and 300mm wafers go online early next year things may get more interesting. Assuming their marketing department doesn' t end up like Randy Quaid (I think that is his name) flying into the belly of the beast lol
