"AMD has been surging for the past year and a half or so and enthusiasts are pretty hyped about their x86-64 architecture. But the fact that enthusiasts (and some major manufacturers) are taking the Athlon 64/Athlon FX/Opteron plunge, Dell is still one of the more prominent holdouts:

Dell's stance on this is that they don't see a strong demand from their customers and thus won't consider AMD based PCs just yet. Dell's CEO, Kevin Rollins, makes it very clear that Dell won't be offer AMD based PCs anytime soon, by stating 'We're the most successful PC company on the planet and we don't have AMD'.

Pretty strong words there from Dell's CEO. He is right and Dell's sales have been up for the third quarter, but good times don't always last and relationships can be broken..."

i say we all take a few minutes and email dell and tell them to start producing AMD machines. maybe a little AT affect will help

1. people here hates dell already
2. people hate dell even more with the india tech support
3. slap on amd and when those amd tech support calls goes to india, you'll be far worse off and you'll hate dell more

I dont own the lower end dell stuff, i mostly buy the 4k-5k precision 650/670 series, they run 24/7 on the trading floor here and have no problem, I have over 60 dell servers, powervaults, dell/emc san arrays.. so far only 2 scsi drive off the server has failed (scsi). 1 scsi back plane. 5 ide drives off server since 1999. Thats pretty good track record for me.

No blown power, no blown motherboard or anything else.

We bought my father-in -law a Dell. It has been a support nightmare. Neighbor ordered a Dell and his order came to the door with a CRT instead of the LCD he ordered. He had to send it back.

I really like AMD chips. Without the AMD competition to Intel we would still be paying through the nose for CPUs and AMD has been very innovative pushing Intel to be likewise.

Dell is also too restrictive with their options. I'd rather have one custom built to my exact specs.

The Dell I have at my desk was a complete slug until we formatted the drive and re-installed W2K. I think all of their adware was sucking what little juice it had. Now it clips along pretty good.

I wouldn't buy a Dell.

i already bought a lot of amd since 1999.. joining the forums since then and every loves amd which is why Im rich now.. they price in profit way before announcement so if you are buying you better get ready..

amd is great, so what if dell doesn't use it.. sun does for their new server and thats good enough.. it takes time for people to adopt.. i say within the next 10 year, amd should be able to gain a lot more market shares than now

I don't think Dell will switch to AMD until they see it start to hit their profits. Based on what I've been reading over the years, it looks like Intel is financing Dell so why should they bother. Until IBM, HP, Gateway or whoever starts gaining on Dell or outselling them they have Zero reason to want to switch because they are making easy money. They would have to sell a heck of alot of AMD machines with a huge profit margin to replace any Intel money they would lose for selling both processors. Which will probably not happen since it appears that they can't sell AMD machines and still make the same profit. Who knows Intel could be paying them so much money that their processors are almost free.

Who really cares about Dell anyway? If they don't want to treat their customers with the respect they deserve then they deserve to lose business. This applies equally to any company that doesn't believe in taking care of their customers. Those that don't listen, eventually die and are replaced by something better anyway.

almost every company is like that.. eventually they get too big and cant deal with the customers.. so it doesn't suprise me..

the intel link is very strong, dell does get first offer on new intel chip almost one month before other people..

Why is Dell and AMD such a hot topic now?

Dell says customers just not asking for AMD chips... by Macro2

Dell customers really do want AMD? by Macro2

Dell = Owned! by Mik3y

The Dell Thread by febuld

nick, Macro, Mik3y are pretty much AMD fans... But I don't understand why you care so much about if Dell carries AMD or not. If AMD becomes more popular, their prices will go up. Price is one of the primary reasons people like AMD. Also, it's not like 95% (or probably more) of the enthusiasts would ever buy a Dell anyway. We all build our own.

My other question, which was posted in a couple of the other threads, but never did receive an answer: Put yourself in Dell's shoes... How could they benefit from using AMD? Now compare that to how the downside of committing to AMD, keeping in mind that AMD cannot guarantee the supply that Dell has queried about in the past.

no i like it that way... another good reason NOT to buy dells. i agree with wingznut, keep inferior products like dell, ipod, aol to ignoramuses so we technologically aware people can enjoy better products at more competetive pricing.

AMD doesn't have the capacity right now to supply Dell...except for server chips where Rollins is hem' n' hawing about opterons right now.

RE:"Wingznut is just a Intel fan"

I certainly hope so. Intel writes his paycheck.
OTOH, he probably feels a little lonely around here with all the AMD fans and few Intel fans.

I got Wingznut's back. Perhaps Intel fans are a little more...civilized...in their posting habits. But seriously though, anyone here who is educated about CPU architecture or fabrication raise your hand. Until you're confident enough to wave your hand high, even in a room full of electrical engineers, I don't think posting about which CPU is better than another is legitimate. The more and more I learn in my CPU architecture class, the more I realize that I don't know. And chances are you don't, either.

(Sunner and pm are exempt from that last statement. They know their sh!t.)

EDIT: The "you" in "and chances are you don't, either" is a figurative "you" meant to apply to everyone who reads my post. It's not a direct attack at you, Macro2. Sorry for any confusion.
