....the invoice quickly climbs towards $5000 and deep into Alienware territory.

Anyone who drops $5K on a Dell or Alienware has more money then common sence.

IMO if your a guy that has to have the latest everything then you might as well do it yourself and truely have the latest and greatest of everything...you can go nuts with $5k at a place like Newegg or Mwave.

If you really want the latest and greatest, Alienware often gets new hardware before it's commercially available to us mere mortals.

DIY is the way to go, but the general public is always in lazy mode(why build one when some else can) so no matter how you look at it the Dells and Alienwares out there will always cater to that audience.

DIY can net you a better system then this. Most people are afraid of the jump without a support center Net below (although it usually sucks anyway)

If you are gonna drop big bux then go falcon-nw or voodoo.
Alienware offers the same stuff a DIY'r can build at about a 35% markup.

Thinking about having 5k to spend at newegg makes my pc pants go crazy

That markup pays for people's salary and tech support..

The vast, vast majority of PC users are just that, users, not builders. They don't have the time or care to build thier own, that is why you have OEM's in the first place.

I have an alienware notebook and their just as fast/faster than most most desktops. I believe it was even possible to switch out vid cards on the latest alienware notebooks. If you actually check out alienware's site, their computers are just about priced the same as many others, the only extra's your paying for is the service they provide and the bunch of cool crap they offer.

Thanks for the post, but the article was about desktops not notebooks. Dell has a long way to go if they think they are going to impress people (gamers) with their xps line of desktops. For starters Alienware unlike dell is
a strong AMD supporter and Untill Dell gets that message; They will sell few systems. Laptops on the otherhand are a differant story. Alienware and Dell are running a close race when it comes to Game Class Laptops (Desktop Replacements). I can speak personaly about the whole Inspiron Line*: What a piece of Crap! XPS and no doublty is better than Inspiron and earned a Maximum PC Kick Ass Award. My only gripe about moble XPS is that to the best of my knowledge they don't offer Pentium M as a Processing option. Personaly I think Dothan is better suited to gaming than Prescott or Nothwood. I would never buy a Dell Desktop(after 1995), but would seriously consider an XPS notebook as one of my purchase canidates along with Alienware, Falcon N-W, Voodoo, and a Few others.

And yes you can upgrade the Graphics with Alienware and Voodoo. Falcon North-West i am not too sure of.

Foot Notes:
*my parents recieved one for free from their company. I know some other people who have purchased 5100, 8100, and 8500's. They are super flimsy, cheaply made, and Generaly very run hot and provide less than mediocre performance. And dont forget the recalls.

Anything marketed as a "Gamer" PC in the weekend ads of best buy, curcuit city, etc. is suspicious as h3ll in my book. DIY IMO! Screw global big business capitalism.

I am a big supporter of DIY. All of my machines are hand crafted.

Are you some kind of communist? 'cause that stuff aint working. China and Russia are quickly becoming capitolist in order to play catch-up with the Good 'ol USA!
