I'm not seeing the $40 off $300 in my cart automatically even when I go through Software and Peripherals. When I click on the link for that discount on the Software and Peripherals page, I get a "Sorry we are unable to process your request at this time." error on their web page.

sounds like a good deal but Im gonna graduate soon, so it might not be used as often as Id like. Is there a limit on what size flash cards the Axim takes? Its function as an mp3 player is something Im looking for.

BTW, here are the terms of the rebate, if you're too lazy to check it out...

Same here...no extra $25, but I did get the $40 off and free shipping. With the rebate, that is still a good deal. I should be able to sell my iPAQ and breakeven. But rats...I forgot about ebates!

nm, it works if you click manually through to find the axim, don't search or directly link to it!!! Jumping on it as soon as I get home... I guess I should carry my Dell Coupon codes everywhere I go... :|

Haven't really kept up with PDA's... any links to review? Is this a rebadge of another PDA? Any wireless options? Is the IR good enough to use as a remote control (like you can with some of the palms with better IR)? Any info on other cool stuff it can do?

1) Nope, it's an original design

2) Not integrated, though many have reported success with a variety of 802.11b CF cards. Supposedly Dell will introduce the X7 soon with integrated Wi-fi, but pricing has not been announced.

3) The IR works OK with IRDA, but no good for consumer IR (needed for remote controls, etc...) You can buy a CF IR emitter card designed to do this however.

I have to dig through my mail to see if I can't find a coupon for this. It's nice unit and will make a nice remote control for my system at home with the IR card... A lot cheaper than a color pronto. My wife always throws away my old magazines, catalogs etc. because "they pile up", so I may have to wait until next next one shows up. :-(

the biggest gripe about the axim from the reviews Ive read is that its a lil bit bigger than most PDAs

Hmmm....$40 off $300 not showing up for me no matter how I click/link to it. Perhaps they fixed it?

Also, I have a $35 of coupon at home if someone wants it. $5 paypal and it's yours.

Nope still works, goto www.dell.com, click on Home & Home Office, search for 4001YR, click on See all Handheld Results, click on the Axim and add it to your cart. The discount should show up. You can't go through one of the 'Customize It' links. If you do that the coupon doesn't show up.

Ahhh....I figured it out. Too bad I ended up giving away my coupon for $35 off! Oh, and the fact that I don't have $274 to spend on it kind of has something to do with it too...

edit...not that I'd know what to do with it once it came....lol!

I got a new Dell Small and Medium Business catalog (Jan, 2003) that lists a lower priced Axim X5 starting at $249 - $50 MIR with no other restrictions. It has a slower CPU (300 MHz vs. 400 MHz), less memory (32 MB vs. 64 MB) and less flash ROM (32 MB vs 48 MB), but if it does what you need, it's $100 less. More info on the different models

By the way, if you ordered an Axim and haven't received an order # (within 24 hrs) yet from Dell, it could be because they're pitching a bitch over the stackable coupons. I called ONLY to determine the status of my order, and spent a lot of time trying to find someone who could just give me a status and an order #. After a few hours on hold, I finally reached a Dell CSR that explained as of yesterday, they weren't going to honor the stacking coupons ($40 + $35), however today they decided they were.

Long story short, your order may get cancelled or delayed because of the fiasco over the coupons. As usual. I was able to get my order # and everything seems to be kosher, but they may be reviewing all Axim orders on a case-by-case basis. Just so ya know.

I signed up for the prefered customer account via phone and she temporarily approved me. Then I went back to the websitewhere i previously could not get the prefered customer link to submit properly......and it suddenly let me through. Then I placed the order with the 40 off showing up. But the 25 off never showed up anywhere. Should I call them and ask why it doesn't show or will it show up later when I'm officially approved for the account? What should I do?

The viewsonic is nice & Amazon has it for $284.05. I think it's very competitive w/ the low-end Axim, with the XScale? 300MHz processor and all... It doesn't have as much expandability (only SD slots). It's probably slimmer than the Axim though...

Finally the Pocket PC market gets interesting

Finally got my confirmation...but I had to call to get it. I spent about an hour on hold in Dell phone system hell until I got hooked up with the peripherals division. "Jonathan" looked up my order and immediately put me on hold to "check something". When he came back on, he said it got "hung up in the computer system" and he would process the order. I had no other coupons but the $40 off and free shipping. He confirmed the $309 price and I received my confirmation e-mail. Expected ship date is around the first of Feb.

For those of you waiting, it may be worth a call to get the order through. Even without any extra coupons, after the rebate, I should be able to sell my iPAQ and breakeven. A nice upgrade, thanks for the post.

UPDATE: I checked my order on the Dell site and under order detail, the rebate is listed on a separate line, so I expect I will have it on my packing slip and I will be able to submit it.

I just called to confirm my order (cuz I never got an order number or anything else after my order acknowledgement) and i talked to a guy in accessories, and he verified that there were problems in my order and it wasnt' going through, he was very nice and corrected this for me, and now i'm all set. Also he said about the rebate, that as long as you ordered before the 19th, you'll be set (but it has to be postmarked within 30 days of receiving your Axim).
