Dell Axim Advice

I recentley graduated high school and have been given a bunch of graduation money.

I was given quite a bit by my grandparents, who told me to go out and buy something and not save it. I have a pretty good computer, so I really do not want to buy a laptop just yet for college. However, I was looking at getting a Pocket PC. After looking over all the various models, I think the Dell Axim looks like the best deal. The college I will be attending also has WiFi spots everywhere, so it would be cool to get a card (onsale at CompUSA this week, too!)

But, I do want to get something practical. Will this just turn into an overpriced Game Boy? I will be attending Georgia Tech, so I will take a lot of math / science courses. I would get a keyboard to type with, but much of the time I see myself writing down math notation. Sure you have the stylus, but wouldn't pen and paper almost be easier?

Does anyone here at college use there PPC frequentley for non-gaming purposes?

pocket pcs are like the bastard children between legal pads and notebook computers. They don't have the power or somputing resources of a full blown computer, and they don't have the ease of use that you get with pad and paper...what they DO provide is an electronic medium for your notes and crap. I used my palm to punch out code for my CS classes when the professors were particularly boring...a laptop was too big and overpowered for the purpose...a pen and paper wasn't digital so I'd just be typing it all over again anyways. Pretty much, it boils down to asking yourself...is there something that you'd use a pen and paper for if it were instantly readable by a computer...and voila! you have a use. Everyone in non-technical majors or non-computing majors @ my school got palms and pretty much used them as mp3 players/games.

Good point on the CS classes. I will be taking some and it seems kind of pointless to write out code you will be retyping.

Yeah, I figured a lot of people just used them as expensive MP3 players or for videogames.

Is there a significant advantage to getting the 400mhz model over the 300mhz model?

since the xscale instruction set includes that of the StongArm, the 300mhz xscale is about on par with a 200mhz StrongArm, so the 400mhz you will be more juice out of, however that being said, the only real use you will get out of that is high FPS on movies, IIRC the 400mhz can support 21FPS and the 200mhz StrongArm does 14-16.

The best use of a PDA is its portability of calendar and e-mail functions. Everything else is gravy. If these functions are not useful to you, your PDA will find your desk drawer within a month.
