This has a lot of implications, some minor, some major. Especially for me. I might have to wear a bunny suit with big ears, for crying out loud.
The minor ones are obvious, will Alienware pick up the legendary Dell industrial design and world-class support, or will they continue as a separate entity? Will Mikey Dell become the next Steve Jobs, or is he doomed to stay about as exciting as a rack full of Presslers? Will Alienware dump AMD, or will AMD take hold of Dell through the back door?

Dell squashes Alienware buyout rumour
'If we want cool, we'll do cool... '

Dell has moved to quash rumours it had acquired rival PC vendor Alienware.

Speculation about a possible buyout has been rife since Rahul Sood, CEO of Voodoo PC, a US OEM computer supplier, posted his thoughts on such a move on his blog.

Sood wrote: "The PC gaming market is threatening Dell's 'perceived technology leadership' - and ultimately the consumer space. The Alienware brand is cooler than Dell, and perhaps a likely candidate for Dell to take over based on size alone."

Sood's speculation was corroborated by an anonymous source "at a high-end vendor", who told silicon.com sister site CNET.com's Rich Brown that "the deal has been done... [and] his company has received an influx of resumes from Alienware employees".

Questioning the accuracy of the information, a Dell Australia and New Zealand spokesperson, said the original source - Voodoo PC - is unreliable since the company is an Alienware competitor.

The spokesperson said: "I'd suggest you take that speculation with a grain of salt given the origin stated in the blog [Alienware's competitor] - you can never be sure what the motivation is."

He also questioned the reasons behind such an acquisition, stating that Dell has the potential to be seen as a "cool" company, and is more than capable of building viable gaming machines without Alienware's help.

He said: "Dell's XPS range already offers better performance and better value than Alienware's machines, and in the XPS mobile concept you've seen the potential of one of the cool new things Dell could do this year."

Meanwhile, Alienware released a statement that read in part: "At this time, Alienware will not comment on any speculative stories or rumours concerning Dell and Alienware's association. While we do believe that news stories like this are ultimately a strong positive reinforcement of the Alienware brand and the company's success, we will not comment on speculation or potential future events."

Also, if it were to happen, I'd bet that Dell would just sell AMDs under the "Alienware" brand, while keeping "Dell" computers Intel based. At least for the immediate term. If this were to happen, it could be seen as a way for Dell to easily enter into the AMD sellers arena, rather than altering their established Intel production.

In response to the article quoted above, Dell may not be looking for "cool" but may be looking for an easy route to sell AMD computers.

Either way, the deal is just a rumor/speculation now, as are my above thoughts.

really? then how can you deny this?
Dell will indefinently continue to use Intel cause just like apple, they get good prices if they only use Intel. Dell said that AlienWare can choose which CPU's it can use.

Looks like its a done deal.. here is a little quote from an article I just read on Yahoo :

Dell Inc. confirmed Thursday that it had acquired boutique PC vendor Alienware, a move that will add some zing to the company's image.

Although Dell's acquisition was widely anticipated, Alienware chief executive Nelson Gonzalez said that his company will remain a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dell, continuing its own brand, design, sales and marketing, and support. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Just googled "alienware dell" and it's true! I'm not sure if the papers have been signed, but Dell is now the proud owner of Alienware.

Seems like Dell would be smart enough to leave Alienware alone for the most part and just provide resources for support and whatever else Dell might be able to contribute.

I think that Dell XPS can definately compete with Alienware, but what's the point in competing when you can just own both companies and make twice the profits?

ANd they will get good prices from Intel if they manufacture with AMD as well. It's called competition.

There are many other reasons for them not to have machines with AMD inside than some mythical lower price concept from INtel. It's not the way it works.
