Dell has a $50 off their Mp3 players with free shipping
15gb $249.99 - $50 = $199.99
20gb $299.99 - $50 = $249.99

(must add to cart to see instant discount)

A possibly even better deal is an "outrageous bundle" consisting of DJ20 ($249), Sony Noise Canceling Headphone($60), Leather case ($35), Car cassette adapter with power supply ($35) and inline remote ($20), which they are selling for $329 total (that's another $71 off the otherwise $400 total (Dell claims it would be $429 I don't know...))

I could not resist, in particular since I had an individual $25 off coupon from a system purchase brining it down to $304
linkage

You may not be able to stack it with $50 off.

The $25 is one of those individual flyer coupons that they pack with new systems sometimes. It did stack with the outrageaous deal - at checkout it listed $100 off of bundle $25 off for coupon and $8 off for free shipping

I'd assume it will work with the $50 off just the same

Just got it - and to value this post you have to know that I used to be kind of an audiophile snob when it came to music - oh well I guess I still am.

I do not like the forced musicmatch interface that is required to install - went over to windows media player right away (MM did not discover my library) Now this whole package contains a lot of stuff I am not sure I am going to use, but one thing is for sure - this player sounds AWESOME.

Part of it is the player itself, but Dell also took the right step and unlike many other DID NOT SKIMP ON THE HEADPHONES. They do provide phantastic earbuds as standard headphones with every unit (not to be mixed up with the noise canceling Sony unit which was part of this special deal and which they have not shipped yet). These head phones allow to extract even the finest nuances of music (comparable only to $100+ top level Sony fontopid styles). I never thought I would like 128kb/s MP3s but this player/headphone combo makes it possible.

If they were good headphones they would make you hate 128kb/s MP3, not like it

Great price for the player though...considering picking it up since I have a 50 Amex Dell coupon from my member's rewards.

You are right 128kbit/s is nothing compared to a pure wav file. These little cans do make the best out of it though (besides I encode most of my own stuff at 192kbit/s wma)

Deal seems to be dead now, they are just offering a 10% discount currently.

I'm still waiting to see what HP is going to do with their iPods. If they allow you to use HP infolab training points (if you work in retail store that sells HP products), it will be a scortching hot deal for a few of us here. Plus, I have grown very attached to iTunes now that they have worked out most of the initial bugs in the Windows version with the 4.2 release. I don't know if I could cope with going back to MusicMatch (even if I am only using it for file transfers). Plus I want to parkate in some AAC goodness so I can get better sound quality and squeeze a few more songs into the player at the same time. Of course that means I'll have to go through and re-rip my whole CD collection.

<----- Quietly looks at his Rio Nitrus which came with Sennheiser MX300's.

Also, it is a general standard that the higher the quality of headphone/speaker, the more accurate reproduction of the sound will occur, and thus the more evident flaws will stand out in poor compression.

It is also a general standard that most people have never heard "audiophile" quality components for themselves, and cannot differeniate therefore between a quality audio component, and one that is decent. With that said, I have never heard the Sony Fontopia earbuds. Also, I would not base a mp3 decsion at all on which headphones came with it (unless it came with HD580's or SR-80's =)

Damn... looks like it's $225 now, which is $25 over my budget.

Can this be used as a portable hard drive? And if so, does it require drivers to show up as a removable drive?

Yes you can move files onto it with special software provided by dell. It does not show up as an external hdd though, so to that extent you can only transfer files between machines that have the software installed - this is obviously not as universal as an external hdd or a usb drive

Are you somehow implying that it might have sounded better if the headphones were crappier because that disguises the flaws?

Obviously the better the headphones, the better the sound and that is regardless whether you are listing to the latest DCD SACD or a 64 bit encoded MP3 file. Obviously better headphones will also point out flaws in the recording more obviously, I do think though that the advantge of proper retrival of the positive aspects of a recording far outweighs any flaws that may become evident.

Interestingly enough I compared the same recordings with the same cans on the dell and on 2 year old creative nomad II - guess what: the nomad had a lot more compression hiss going on than the dell(on which it is almost inaudible. So I guess dell did not only provide excellent headphones but also incorporated some really good circuitry into the player itself.
