the 22" is actually really hot price. i saw on slickdeals that you can stack a 10% ebay coupon with it to get it down to 260s. very nice.
the E228WFP is a successor to the E207WFP, lower end without USB hub or composite, s-video or component input.

if you have no need for those, it is a great monitor

For the price of that 27", you might as well save a few bucks, and get 3" more with the 30" Dell. $1400 is high, considering for example you can get the 42" 1080p Sceptre at Costco.com for $1300 which would include as many if not more inputs and a tuner!

I got my eye on the 22" display. Been wanting to go widescreen for over a year now, it would be replacing my 2001FP if I do get it. Just wondering what the quality is on the panel, anyone seen any reviews yet?

So the new things from Dell from CES are, the 27" and 22" displays and the watercooled XPS system. Nothing new in terms of notebooks besides the airbrushed XPS notebook.

There's a lot of information here at the Widescreen Gaming Forum.

Personally, it seems Dell's 22" would be a TN panel, using 16.2M colors + dithering to get all the colors. That wouldn't be too bad, unless you're in graphic design. Not sure about the 27"; all I know is that it's way out of my price range.

As for Dell's 2007WFP (their older model), it costs more because it uses an I-SPS panel for good all-around colors (if not great) and decent response time. I'd pick it over this new 22" in only for that. Only problem is, the 2007 comes in two panel flavors (what I seem to be seeing as a 'panel lottery'): in I-SPS (good) and S-PVA (IMO, not so good). S-PVA's have terrific color (or, rather, my Gateway FPD2185W did), but they lose dark/black clarity when looking straight on at the screen. Considering I stare straight on at the screen 99% of the time while in front of one... Of course, move to the side, and the problem's solved (about 10 degrees, I think). :/ It killed me to look at Hardforum, considering the red stripe across the screen was darker in the middle. Yay for open box items not having restocking fee at Circuit City!

Anyway, if you need a panel for gaming, I'd probably go for the E228WFP. If you want something with more finesse, the 2007WFP is what I'm looking at. That, or the NEC 20WMGX2.

Nice price on the 22" though.

You would still be getting ripped off considering you can get the 37" Vizio for $899 or less which is rated higher, cost less, has a better warranty, more inputs, better aesthetics , and has NTSC/ATSC/QAM HDTV Tuners.

Unfortunately, the eBay 10% off coupon is for SB only and will not stack with the current automatic 10% off --

well the 22" is probably a TN panel, so it might be worse for color reproduction. Maybe better for gaming.

You're gonna lose a lot of real estate by upgrading from a 20" 4:3 to a 22" 8:5 monitor. so unless you are all about widescreen this is not a nice upgrade at all.

You gotta get at least a 23" WS to have the same 4:3 area/vertical height as 20" 4:3..

Dell Canada released the 22" LCD during their Boxing week deals up here in Canada, $299 Can, and free shipping. Pretty hot deal. However these are Tn panels and people are having various issues and gripes about this LCD. You can read some comments here ... RFD Link

This at newegg is the same price, and (AFAIK) has been sitting at $300 shipped for over a month(?). Also, from doing a bit of reading, it appears that Chimei makes all of the 22" TN panels (except I think Samsung is starting to make their own, but the popular 225BW is the Chimei panel).

I just bought a Chimei this week (ordered Monday, this thread started on Tuesday) to replace my 2001fp, and while the vertical loss is noticeable, so is the 2.5" gain on width. Wide-screen media looks very noticeably larger, and in WoW it's like I've gained a whole ton of room to stash UI crap in and still be able to see a whole lot of what's going on. The panel is way, way brighter than the 2001. Also, it had been mentioned in other places that these TN panels were more sensitive to viewing angle. It's noticeable if you walk past it, but when you're sitting in front of the monitor it's not.

I guess the nice thing about ordering from Dell is that you can use their no-questions return if you get a bad pixel. Mine has an all-blue pixel along the right edge, but it's barely noticeable. Overall, I'll pretty happy. Can't wait to use it for some WoW and for watching movies/TV on.

The Dell advantage is the no hassle return for quality and pixel problems. That is the only reason to buy from Dell.

I am reasonably sure you only need a single-link DVI card. The 2407, which is basically the same sans a few inches, only requires a single-link DVI connection.

no it doesn't. We have two in our office.

Dave, your answer kind of makes it sound like it DOES need dual-link.

Simply put, 1920x1200 is one of the last resolutions supported by single-link DVI. Anything higher will be Dual-Link.

It would seem with these two new Dell Monitors that the time would be right to have a fire sale on their older stuf...it remains to be seen if the 2407 will sell for less. Any speculation on the price? I game on an old Sony F520 - pro photo monitor for those who cared (about 10 yrs ago) and at 20 inch viewable it would behoove me to upgrade at least to 24 inch if I am going widescreen.

OK, the 22" E228WFPis only like $319 shipped. Any opinions as to whether the it would be better/worse than the 22" Sceptre from Costco ($375-30=$345 AR - but local no hassle return).
Sceptre has HDMI, DVI & VGA whereas Dell has only DVI/VGA, but has that digital content protection (bah)
Sceptre comes with a crap cord that has to be replaced & a hokey stand
Dell comes with an ok DVI cord & a non-adjustable stand
Sceptre will have significant screen bleed top & bottom. Dell, according to this, has all sorts of minor display problems.

I'm not a graphic designer, its for general internet, business, and a few games maybe.

I am in the market for a 22 incher as well.
(upgrade for one of my dual 19inch 1280x1024's)
I think a wide 22 would fit nicely next to a 4:3 19 inch (about the same height actual and pixals?)

I just want to be able to watch widescreen moves on something bigger than 1/3rd of my 19 inch, and hopefully be able to watch over the air HDTV using a tuner card like the ATI hdtv wonder.
(I dont own a tv... or have room for one)

Will over the air HDTV look better on an HDCP display?

Why should I not get this x2gen 22inch from costco for only $250?

Thanks guys.
