Dell fraud

My wife's Inspiron 300m, which I bought a little over three years ago, was nearing the end of its warranty. My wife was experiencing some problems with the laptop, so about three weeks prior to the expiration of the warranty we logged a support call. They said they would schedule a visit and contact us.

Unannounced, the repairman showed up about a week later. The ham-handed repairman cheerfully explained how he hadn't had any experience on that model, but that he had badly screwed up a repair on a similarly-equipped X300 the week before. He put the laptop back together without making an important connection, so he had to take it apart again. In the meantime I had to take an important call, so I wasn't able to take a look at the machine before he slipped out the door.

Well, it turned out that not only had he not installed the proper drivers and maybe connections (it was a motherboard replacement) which caused some issues with power management, etc., but the keyboard was put in incorrectly. My wife called Dell, and they said they'd schedule another visit to correct the problems.

To make a long story short, the warranty elapsed with no visit. My wife called and asked what was happening, and was told that the laptop was now out of warranty and Dell would not repair it.

I'm very angry, but we've decided to let it go because it's not worth our time to fight with them any further. Over the years I've purchased many laptops, workstations and servers from Dell, but never again. I have successfully warned off two of my wife's family members from a Dell purchase in the last couple of weeks.

I knew Dell's support was bad, but not outright criminal.

I would pursue this problem with customer service if you haven't yet, don't give in, because that is ridiculous.

You say Dell sent out a repairman.

Was that repairman a Dell employee or was the repairman contracted out from another company locally to assist you?

Seem to me Dell dropped the ball and possibly so did you in not following up immediately on the issue!!

No, it's not, genius. I'm warning people away from Dell. Crawl back in your hole-- that's a good troll.

Yes, my wife did. She got a call back from a woman who identified herself as a customer service supervisor, and was the one to break the news about the laptop being out of warranty and thus no longer eligible for onsite repair as specified in the warranty.

When my wife asked to speak to HER supervisor, she was denied; the woman said that she was the regional customer service manager (a likely story), and there was no way my wife could talk to someone with more authority.

I was so mad, I was on the verge of hiring a lawyer, but my wife talked sense into me.

My wife spent over ten hours on the phone trying to deal with this issue, until I told her to drop it.

You're crying to the wrong forum since 99.9% of the people here build their own computers

Just be glad I don't report you for calling m a "cocktard". I have read this site for years and know that it's not frequented just by do-it-yourselfers. Go to hell.

We did follow up, the very next day. The repairman was contracted out from another company-- he said he was self-employed.

You deserve to die. Stop breathing.

On the other hand, I personally think that is outright criminal. You should pursue this case with DELL until they give you a free repair of your laptop. It's not right when someone promises you a warranty and fails to carry it out to the highest level. And take it through emails and chat, I wouldn't want to spend more than an hour on the phone

No it isn't, it's a BB as such people can provide help with problems and warnings about inferior parts and services.

On the downside you can post on here.

I'm not sure which is the lesser evil.

I knew Dell was pretty much bad from the start. I hated their computers and stuff (but that doesn't mean that their computers are bad). I wonder how much praise Dell has gotten for their support...

Actually, I think Dell does a good job in the niche they serve, for the most part. There's no question that they have to repair that computer, as the original messed-up repair was performed in the warranty period. I can't explain the trouble you had getting through to someone who could make the right decision, but I bet a call to whomever regulates warranties in Texas would have an effect. On the other hand I can understand you cutting your losses. Too bad, I've bought a lot of Dells for a business in the past, hate to see them acting this way.

For future reference-- alot of companies like Dell and others contract out to locals to fix there equipment. That is local who supposedly have the certification to fix there equipment!

I have always found it best to not even allow a local to even step foot in the house!
Often those people who come to your house are NOT from the best Local computer store in the area.

I am sorry you had a bad experience with DELL. My son-in-law works for Dell in Ireland!!

Good Luck!!

Thanks for the info, I'm sure none of us will ever buy from them again because one person had a bad experience.

Nobody ever said - never buy from Dell.

Where did you read those exact words?

FYI - Dell subcontracts all of its field svc. techs. They do work for Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. So it's not Dell in particular that you're problem is stemming from. Although IIRC, they do require the techs to be Dell certified.

Correct. I've only had one experience with an on-site tech come to my home to fix a laptop. He was quick, friendly, and did the job right.

Dell sells 10 million computer systems a year. They are bound to piss off a few people here and there. It happens. That said, I am overall very happy with their products and prices, and I have purchased well over 400 systems from them in the past 12 months, albeit for resell. But my personal work/gaming/neffing system is a Dell 9100 and it suits me just fine, especially for the price, even after upgrading it.

Most likely it was subcontracted to Unisys, that's who's been doing all the Dell repairs in our area. From my experience, they're slow, don't call the alternate number you give them and they're management doesn't seem to care either.

Where are you located? If your in the MD area, I'll put it back together for you as I'm dell certified (much easier because they'll just ship you parts instead of sending a person out). Send me a PM.
