Dell Hard drive : How to get service after 30 days ?

I bought a 80G Dell HDD a few months back, thanks to hot deals forum.

It is now dieing on me now. How do I get support ?

Dell telephone support is based on a "express service code", which comes only with their systems. Has anyone been in this place before ? How did you get the HDD exchanged ?

if it's a retail Maxtor, they're really good with support, from my past experiences. they'll ship you out a new HD b4 you send the broken one back. you have togive them a cc # though.

It is a Western Digital. Their online RMA would not accept the serial number I gave. They say the HDD was sold to a system manufacturer who will provide the support. I'm on hold at Dell for the past half an hour going from one CSR another. Lets see what happens. I'll then call WD if Dell does not help.

This situation is really bad ... I think we should be very careful about buying any "accessory" from Dell ....

Just got off the phone from Dell and Western Digital.

The news is bad. Western Digital will not give warranty because it is supposed to be an OEM drive. Dell will not replace hard drives they sell after 90 days (i.e. Dell warranty on drives is just 3 months).

Not Hot at all.

The Dell rep says this warranty info would have been listed on the Dell site for that HDD. I don't remember seeing it, though ....

Any info or suggestion appreciated ...

At least now you have a free paperweight. It's not too shabby. Otherside you'd have to pay for a paperweight.
