Beware that Dell doesn't always ship your orders by the shipping method you choose.

These prices are really good. However, it's ironic how Dell charges to upgrade your optical drives if you configure a Dell system. There's like a $70 upcharge to go from a 48X CD-ROM to a 16X DVD-ROM or something.

Does anyone know if either the 32X/12X/40 or 40X/12X/48 CD-RW drives are overcloackable to 48x? What's the model number of the drives that you're getting from Dell? Thanks.

Shoplifter: All 40x drives use the same revision 5hardware as the 48's (thus are overclockable)
Some 32x drives use revision 5 hardware, some use revision 3. Those that are revision 3 can't be upgraded to P-CAV and Mt. Reinier. Revision 5 - again, is basically a 48x.

FYI: 48x gives you a few extra seconds at best over a latest-firmware 40x (with P-CAV). Why?

Because both drives start recording at 22x, then the recording speed goes up as the linear velocity of the sectors over the laser goes up. However, when the speed reaches 40x, the 40x drive will start dropping the RPM (angular velocity) to keep the recording speed (linear velocity) at 40x. The 48x drive will keep the RPM at 9000 or so, so the last 1/10th of the disk will be recorded at speeds 40x to 49x.

the first 90% of the burn is identical on both drives.
