Got the 40x12x48 and 16x DVD DRives today. Did you guys get boxes that were sealed? OR all of them shiped without a plastic seal around the retail boxs? Just wondering if they sent me returned drives. Does anyone also know if there is a law requiring Dell to tell me if they they sold me a return item.? The contents of the box look new and smell new, but I guess I'm just a little parnoid. Thanks for any help.

I've bought several of the Liteon drives from Dell and they don't come with a cellophane seal on the box. If the contents look new, it is most likely new and unused.

OC those lite-ons...
if you read the cdfreaks forums I think there's a thread on overclocking these drives. Some people report on successfully going from 32x -> 40x -> 48x. Good deal if u buy a 32x burner and end up w/ a 48x

The process basically just flashes your cdr w/ a different firmware. The firmware is from lite-on and once you've gone to say the 48x speed u can just download newer firmwares for the 48x drives. Good stuff

So far have accumulated:
Cost-----Item
64.50---80GB 7200RPM Maxtor HD
0.00-----Keyboard
5.00-----56K Modem
10.00---Speakers, including subwoofer
0.00-----Mouse
136.16-Samsung 19" 955DR Monitor
32.81--16X DVD/48X CD-ROM Lite-On
78.00--512MB Mushkin PC2100 DDR RAM

All prices net after rebates and including shipping where applicable. Probably put it in a nice Enermax case like the one I used on my last box (about $60 at Newegg) and a K7S5A as I have in my last one for around $35 or so (or another MB in the same price range).

Not a bad system for ~$425, including a 19" monitor! Wish I had had someone to gift ME one of them when I was 20 years old!!

But u forgot a CPU:Q

Don't know if you had the same problem as me. OR if the deal is dead already but when I was verifying address and agreeing not to export these items. It showed only a 50% shipping discount. but if you go to all the way the last page before you confirm the order the full 100% discount for shipping should be applied. I hope that helps.

Good deal, picked up the Lite-On DVD for $34 dollars. Hard to believe you can buy a DVD drive for less than a new released game.

Scored a Lite-On 32x CDRW for $51.24 with free next day air shipping.

Drive runs extrememly quiet and mad fast. Thinking I am liking the Lite-On CDRW more than the Plextor 24x CDRW I got 2 months ago.

A++ deal

THe 10% doesn't seem to be taking effect, only the free shipping. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

You might be in the small business section instead of the home. If you added any item from SB, and try to add something form the home section, it will default to the "original" basket. Anyhow, just delete your cookies. I just added both dvd roms to my cart in the home section, and the discount shows up fine.

How quickly have you been receiving confirmation notices on this drive? I think I completed the ordering process earlier but I was in the middle of a dozen different things and now it's 5 hours later, I've received no notifications, and I'm wondering if maybe I missed another click-through. So, should I have received a confirmation notice by now?

I ordered mine on the 8th and got it today. I got the 32123S model drive (dated April 2002) in the 32x12x40 retail kit. I does not come shrinkwrapped. I was told by the rep on th phone it would most likely be a 32125W so now I am going to try to return this one and get the 40x.

Hope that helps.

Just call the order in, I scored two Seagate 80GB HDs with it a few hours ago and the CSR said the code is fine, just something is screwed up online. He even asked a supervisor who said the code was still in effect. So I guess YMMV on the 10% off coupon, so just try and call it in...

just confirming (once again) that the 10% off coupon is indeed dead. I find this weird, as the coupon site says it wasn't due to expire for another month. The free shipping is set to expire in a couple days as well, so if you need this soon, dont delay.

Recieved my 16x dvd from them with free overnight shipping. At least they didnt make me wait for UPS ground like i heard some had to.

i believe dell (both home and small business) has some problem redeeming any coupon - it doesn't mean the coupons have expired. i think you will be able to use coupon codes again.

To support RobsTV and simplify the whole deal, yes, I just tried it and it works.

I went to grab the DVD Region Killer by Elaborate Bytes (same people that make CloneCD) at http://elby.ch/english/fun/software/index.html

--> That covers the windows side of the hack. Just set the region that you wish to play a dvd from manually. The program has an option to automatically set it, but it crashed Windows 2000 last time I tried that

Then, I grabbed the firmware update at this site (this NEEDS to be run in Real DOS mode, NOT in a command prompt from windows -- use a win98 bootup floppy or CD if you run Windows 2000/ME/XP) at (look for "Liteon LTD-163 OEM drive") and set the RPC mode to OFF. Reboot the computer, pop in a DVD, you're good to go!

PS - You're doing this at your OWN RISK. If it breaks your DVD player, consider yourself warned: it's not my fault. All firmware updates are delicate, so if your brand new DVD player stops working, you'll know why. Remember, you're the one taking the risk. All that said, I took the plunge, and it worked fine for me. There's no reason why it shouldn't work for you either.
