At Dell.com

Go to Home and configure the Dell Latitude 600m. Keep everything default except the warranty option - take that down to the lowest level.

Add to cart and then enter a coupon for 30% off. Since I can't post the coupon here, you can find it at MY FAVORITE SITE (listed in my sig) in the coupon section.

I bought two, sweetness. I have been waiting for this laptop to drop below 899.99, it's been hard to find it for less than that price. Hot deal.

I have seen a lot of reviews that these laptops are just the worst in quality - anyone here that owns these have an opinion?

User Reviews on CNet

This is a great price for a latop but if it is only going to last a year, it is a pretty expensive laptop at $699/year

The Inspirons in general are of alright quality IMO. I am a fan of the XXXm series though - they feel a lot more robust and sturdy. We have like 4-5 deployed in the office - they're pretty sturdy. (Our system admin uses one, he likes it) Although I do like my Latitude D505 better though

I would NEVER buy another one of these again. Fortunately someone bought it from me. It didn't break but it felt flimsy. The screen easily flexed. Add to that it will ROAST your left hand from the hit of the processor! Live it plugged in at high speed on the CPU and your left hand will start to sweat in short order. Meanwhile your right hand is normal.

I don't know how anyone would buy this PC if they tried it before buying it. It still got warm running on the batteries. I have ordered a bunch of the 8600's and they have this trait to a lesser extent. I am the CIO for a mid sized company and even though we buy almost 100% Dell products, I will have to look elsewhere for laptops. To many design oversights and usability issues. Like or hate them, IBM did a better job on their Thinkpads across the board. Sure there are a few good Dell laptops but it is much harder to find a great one than in IBM's lineup.

Dell can build a great product just their laptops are lacking. If someone GAVE me a 600m I'd sell it immediately and buy something else. I started to detest it and sold it as soon as I could. It holds the record for the shortest time I've ever owned any type of PC. A eMachine laptop would have been better than the 600m!

Ouch. Harsh review.

I bought my fiancee a 600M last year and she's been pretty happy with it. The left side of the palm rest DOES get warm, and she has complained about that after prolonged use. Other than that, the laptop is light and gets great battery life.

IBMs are nicer in general but also a lot more expensive. For a budget laptop, the 600M is a fine choice in my opinion. I opted for the 3 year warranty, only because laptops are not easy to fix yourself if something goes wrong.

You can configure one with 64mb video, 512mb ram, 24x combo drive for around 800+tax, not bad.

Impossible to get it down to $699, as the base price starts at $1199 before any discounts (with 30%, that would equal $840.

op's description isn't so good. You should be clicking on Inspiron, not Latitude. AFAIK they don't sell Latitudes in Dell Home.

I hate the inspiron 600m. Its too heavy and a lot of people seem to have problems with them.

The latitudes are the way to go. Built in wifi + bluetooth, much lighter, fast, cheap. Given a choice, they're definitely the way to go.

According to PCMag user surveys the opposite is true - their business line laptops (read latitudes) have more problems than the Inspirons..

There is also a downloadable chart that compares all the laptop vendors..

The 600M weighs 4-5 pounds. It's definitely a light laptop.

Sure but sometimes it pays to just shell out the extra cash and have something that turns out to be a paperweight. I have friends in my program (we use laptops in class everyday) that simply find their laptops so poorly designed and unusable that they don't even bring them to class anymore. Seeing that our curriculum is designed around accessing information through Wi-Fi in class puts the kids who skimped on their laptops at a disadvantage. The cheap laptop effectively becomes a useless paprweight.

The way I see it,it is better to wait until you can afford a laptop that you will actually find usuable for whatever purpose you need it for.

I bought this laptop a year ago. I returned it after 2 weeks to get the 8600 model. I noticed it was kinda flimsy behind the LCD screen. If you press behind the screen while it's on, you'll notice the distortion on the screen. That might not be a problem for most of you since you usually don't push against the back of the screen while it's on but I didn't like the idea of a flimsy laptop. The 8600 model I replaced it with doesn't seem to have that problem. Keep in mind this was all last year so I wouldn't know if they fixed it or not.

Too heavy? WTF are you talking about? You really shouldn't give opinions about something you have never used.

Well said! Im sick of reading those kind of moronic posts...

At any rate, this is a 5lb laptop we are talking about. Its NOT going to be built like a tank. Who in the world is going to sit there pressing in the back of the LCD with thier finger anyway???

Your not suppost to play football with this laptop.....

To say the laptop will be a paperweight is idiotic. I have an old Sony 200 Mhz laptop, it's an absolute piece of crap and I still use it for internet. Ever stop and think that maybe your standards are just a tad too high? 699.99 is a good price for a laptop that is around 5 pounds, I pumped it up to 512 and put on Burner/DVD combo and it was 780.80 shipped. That's a good deal regardless of how warm my wrist is.

I have a 600m that I bought when they had the $750-off coupons in October - in fact, I'm writing this on it. I have used it as my sole PC since I bought it. I'd say that, although you get what you pay for, it's not a bad machine, and pretty nice for the money. It definitely has a bit of flimsiness, but in general it has worked well and been highly reliable, even after my cat knocked it off a table onto a hardwood floor.

I think you are mixing up 600m and 6000 - the 600m is quick, light and has great battery life upward of 3 hours. We are using at least 20 of them and they are very, very nice.

the 6000 is not bad either, but it's a bit heavier (about 7lbs+), but very fast and the SXGA screen is awesome - if configured right it's a desktop replacement.

Who are you referring to with people having problems? i know at least 10 people who have the 6000 and I did not any complaints.

the 600m is also one the few remaining less than 5.5 lbs. laptop that has a parallel port. That's useless for most, but some of us require it because our work uses a parallel dongle.

any other competitor with parallell port, dell or non-dell?

Yeah IBM X31 -> 3.6 pounds.

Most likely IBM T42 also.

Maybe some people need their computer for things other than just internet moron. I personally know people to whom this has happened.
