mine was more loaded than this configuration at $1300 only a month ago.
yeah, i only have the 866mhz cpu, but i have 15 sxga and dvdrom.

How can this be considered "loaded" without even a DVD drive? A DVD is mandatory for a laptop to be considered "loaded".

Actually it does include a 15 inch screen. Go to Dell Home and check out their Inspiron 8100 for 1409. Customize the 32MB GeForce 2 Go to 16MB and you have what the original poster got, except he made a mistake on the 14" screen, because it says you get a 15" upgrade for free. If you want DVD and the Radeon, add them for $79 and $100, respectively.

Anyone know if it's possible to upgrade an inspiron 8100 video chip? I'm just curious to know if this is possible. I have an Inspiron 8100 with the 16 MB GeForce chip and despite what I have seen posted on this thread I have not had any problems with it, at least not after I upgraded the driver avalible on the Dell website. If you laptop now you'll probably get this driver pre-installed anyway.

Bleh dont forget the 8100 is more of a desktop replacement than a true laptop. For those that plan on using it as a laptop I suggest you buy the second battery as well as the much nicer UXGA screen. Essentially this laptop is just a 1 Ghz P3 box with a GeForce2Go. Big whoop.

Of course the most important part with any dell is the warranty so complete care is a must

Loaded would mean full warranty larges sscreen possible and a dvd/cd-rw combo In which case I would have to recommend a Toshiba Satellite 5005-S507 or Satellite 5005-S504 either come with more.
The S507 comes with a GeForce 440 15" UXGA screen & DVD/CDRW combo drive.. The same config on a Dell 8100 comes to $2506 vs $2000. ( I added the Radeon Mobility card since Dell does not even have that option yet).

Dell does not have the cheapest laptop prices out there they just have the most customizable.......

I agree with the warranty.Laptops should be purchased with the best warranty available! I just got off the phone with DELL,my dvd drive went belly up!This is on a Lat.C810,brother to the Ins.8100. As for Toshiba,I have owned 3.I had major problems with the last 2! I now go DELL and IBM! Much better support.

I've been keeping my eye on the outlet store inspiron inventory for a while and it changes like crazy... especially during the day... so if you see on you want you... my advise is to not mull it over for too long... or someone else will snag it!

A friend just got one... and yes it's pretty heavy, but it's got a lot of features... might be nice to take to a LAN party instead of lugging around my desktop. Beware though... he installed W2K on his instead of XP that came with it (you can't get 2K with it from dell) and is having some trouble getting games (Allied Assault and RTCW in particular) to run on it.
