Figure out which USb root hub is causing the problem. Disable them one by one, while you have a device plugged into each USB port. Since you can't do a reinstall, you are going to have to have some USB ports that will not work. It sounds like something go corrupsed in the USB drivers, which I know happens a lot. I would HIGHLY recommend you do a reinstall of Windows, which means you have to tell the person to back up all their crap, and give you the restore CD's.

yeah. had that on the system for about 10 mins and removed it.

ok. i'll try and give that a shot when i get the laptop back up and running.

i went ahead and uninstalled SP 2 ... CPU usage went back to normal ... started installing MS updates ... SP 1 (express) ... system now hangs on boot ... agp440.sys

FYI,

I'm having the identical problem on my laptop except that for me if I suspend ACPI.sys things go back to normal...

Any news ?

PS.

This is on a 2nd reinstall of the OS (THe 1st with XP+SP2, the 2nd with the XP HOME ver that came with the laptop), and I've reset the bios to factory defaults.

nope. still working on it. the owner of the laptop gave me the admin password and it doesn't work.
