cpu is being max out all the time by image name: system , user name: system

i've looked in the event viewer and the only errors i see are for LoadPerf, but I can't find any fixes for that.

the only other thing i could find was a driver for nVidia WDM video capture, had an issue so i disabled it thinking maybe that was causing the cpu to max out for some reason.

any help would be appreciated.

here is the hijackthis log ... not sure if it will be of any help.

And then click on the Processes Tab and see which one is using all the cpu power? Try shutting that down and find out which program is it. You might want to disable it from the Start Menu using MSConfig.

Do you have all the latest Windows updates installed?

Have you updated all of your drivers from http://support.dell.com?

i ran windows update and got all the critical fixes installed. not sure about the updated drivers. i will check (its not my laptop, just trying to fix it)

and its not system idle process, i see that too, but its at 0% CPU

image name: System
user name: SYSTEM
CPU: 99
Mem Usage: 220K

i'd attach a screen shot of the task manager, but i am not sure how.

Just asking, Did you by chance update from SP1 to SP2 and suddenly notice that your CPU rev up to 100%? I had this problem and restored my laptop back to SP1 and the problem disappeared. When I did a clean install with Win XP w/ SP2, everything worked fine.

i'm not sure, i'll ask the laptop owner. the owner is not computer savy, so i doubt they would have installed sp2 themselves.

also how would i do a clean install of xp sp2? its a dell and i don;t think they have the cd's.

I did a clean install with my own WinXP Pro w/SP2. My Dell driver update was no problem because I had my Dell disks.

You can download all the Dell drivers from their website for that particular model.

Before you do that, get Belarc advisor which is a great software for listing all important data as hardware & software. Print out the results before doing a clean install. It will list all the important data on your laptop plus serial numbers too. You're never know until you need them in a pinch.

I think the driver reinstall is the best initial advice. If that fails, try downloading PMON (available under Support Tools on the XP CD or from the Win2K3 Resource Kit) and run it. See what program(s) are causing the resource changes and see if that narrows it down -- delete and reinstall whatever program/driver is most active.

i checked the dell site and they didn't have specific "updates", they just listed drivers

i downloaded Process Explorer program from sysinternals and was playing around with it. i found the 'System' process and checked the properties. i looked at all the threads running and 1 came right to the top for CPU usuage: USBPORT.SYS+0x5e96 .... so i suspended that thread and the CPU usage went way down ... all the way down to 1 or 2% ... so i am thinking that thread is the issue, but what do i do to fix it?

Download and install the latest drivers they've listed for your hardware. If the dates on the drivers listed are after your system purchase date, they're probably newer than what's on your system.

What USB devices do you have connected to your system?

its not my laptop, i'm fixing it for someone else. i'll try and figure out what new drivers dell has up.

as far as usb connections goes, i think they have mouse, digital camera, printer, and i found out they have been trying to do VHS to DVD transfer. not sure if they are using usb for that.

As far as I know, USBPORT.SYS is the generic Microsoft driver for USB communication. It's possible that one of their peripherals has installed a misbehaving driver as well. After you update the system drivers from Dell, I'd also check for any driver updates for their peripherals.

well i've updated a bunch with the dell drivers. even did a bios update and still same issue.

if i disable all 4 usb root hubs i have no issue. but i am assuming that means none of the usb ports will work ....

anymore ideas? i've searched online and the dell forums and can't find anything.

There was some issue with the speedstep / Intel CPU power-management driver. Try updating it.

Try and kill Microsoft's Windows Defender. It is still Beta and it has been slowing many PCs... my wife's Dell Inspiron 8200 is crawling!
