i think i will hold out till after xmas.
Deals should hopefully get better, or I may get a laptop for a gift.

It's better to wait till after christmas and see how many systems are returned and refurbished. Might be able to score if you wait.

This deal has got me wondering: I live in California where the CompleteCare replacement warranty doesn't apply. I wonder, if I purchase the laptop using this loophole, can I call Dell Customer Support after the purchase and ask them to credit me $99 (what the warranty is supposed to cost over the standard 1 year warranty) making this deal even sweeter. Any thoughts?

This is a good deal, however I would also opt for the 20gig hdd and the larger battery. With those options this is still a very good deal given that a cdrw is included, however at small business section the 8100 comes standard with the larger battery and 20gig drive and can be found for $1199 (though no free case, no free cdrw and only 16MB video card = BUT free palm 105 and free shipping ($38) I think).

Regarding the screens everything stated so far is correct, except that one has to take into account that the screen only looks good at its native resolution. Now I have an 8100 with 15" SXGA (1400x1050), and the icons are darn small ( and I have 20/20 or better vision). Given that this is a 14" screen, a lower resolution may actually be advantageous.

Yo

P.s.: I read somewhere that there is also a $25 coupon - does anybody know where I can find that?

Has anyone gotten the confirmation email with the order number? I don't know if mine went through!

Are there any Dell employees lurking here?

If so, whatever happened to Dell's Refer A Friend program?

They used to give free $25 GCs and sometimes $100 GCs per referral but the URL no longer works.

Dang! ordered too early and missed out on the free shipping

The only confirmation I received was that my order was placed. Still waiting for the next one, which means it's going to go through. Hmmm... 2 days and no confirmation email. Doesn't look good

BTW, this is indeed a sweet deal. I've been looking at Dell laptops on almost a daily basis for 2 months... LOL

Sweet.... I'm about to order one. But why are you guys going for a CD-RW? Is this a better value than a DVD-ROM? It seems like watching DVDs on the road makes more sense then burning CDs. After all, most of us have much faster burners in our desktop machines, no? Thanks.

I got it with the DVD, which will be a lot more usefull for me than a CDRW.
Also, I hate to bring everyone down but I have the feeling that we might not get these. We should have definitely gotten a confirmation email with an order number by now.

Here here!

Why anyone gets a CD-RW (unless you're on an extended vacation or use this as a true desktop replacement) is beyond me!

Definitely get the DVD-ROM instead of CD-RW, it's a no brainer. Wouldn't you rather watch a DVD instead of burning apps, MP3s, or pr0n on a long trip?

Considering you can buy 12x/10x/32x CD-RWs for your desktop for around $50, you get a lot FASTER CD-RW for cheaper.

But for people using the laptop on a regular basis (not just for travel), CDRW is much more useful. I'd prefer watch DVD movies on TV.

Hey now,

I think the CDRW goes in general for $179, while a DVD rom can be had for a mere $79 - then again if you don't use the CDRW, the DVD makes more sense - well I got both on my 8100 - and I am actually using the CDRW instead of the floppy.

This deal is reminescent of the Dell2100 900MHz celeron, which was sold in July for $285, because they made a similar error by reducing the price for 3 year warranty . They took a couple of days, but then honored the deal...

WOW - good find - that was $80 yesterday.

$80 is probably not worth it - rather get 512MB RAM at crucial but $30 is definitely worth it

I just couldn't help it!!.
It was either the fujitsu deal, or the Dell deal.
So I went for the dell deal. Lighter notebook but not DVD/CDRW, New not refurshed, 20 more but 1 year warranty. Better Video Card and I hope better battery life.

Any even looked at the Fujitsu Laptop??
Fujitsu 999+tax+s/h= 1180.
Dell = 1203

Now let's hope I can get it before x-mas. Else I will just cancel that zh1t

Forgot to mention.. I spent like 2500 in dell the last month alone!!!

Linksys WiFi AP = 140
Linksys Wifi PCMCIA card = 60
Casio E-200 = 500 Bucks
Dell Laptop = 1200

Hmm not even close to 2500 maybe I should buy more stuff and make it even.

Just another American helping the economy
