The nice thing about them is that they have removable video cards so if you are tired of your 8MB ATI video card, then you can upgrade to the next generation cards from ATI or NVIDIA if and when they release them.

Some models perform better than others. The two major things we need to know are:
1) Which model/configuration is it?
2) Is it brand new from Dell, used or refurb from Dell?

I owned a Dell Inspiron 4000 with WinME, loved the laptop but HATED WinME so I sold the laptop. Thanks to the Hot Deals forum I was able to call Dell, talk to tech support and reported a long list of problems with WinME, they had me try all sorts of trouble shooting stuff but none of them worked. So they mailed me Microsoft Windows 2000 Pro with ALL the Dell drivers for _FREE_ under the condition that I mail back my original WinME CD which I was more than happy to get rid of.

I would recommend buying the newer Dell Inspiron 4000 or 8000 notebooks.

Dell makes the best laptops (the Latitudes, that is). Wait and see if they're going to stock the GF2Go.

Regardless of what else you might say about them, you can't take it away from Dell when it comes to their design team. Especially their notebook designers.

I guess if I were going to issue any warnings, it would be to choose well before buying, since there's such a wide range of options available. The good ones aren't cheap though, unless you buy one stripped down. By the good ones, I mean the Inspiron 5000 & 8000 or the Latitude C or CPx series

If you don't mind buying refurbed, you can sometimes get a good deal on the Inspiron 7500 (my all-time favorite Dell - I wish they still made them) decked out with a 15.4" LCD, a 750Mhz P3 and all the goodies. Get it from the DFO though, 'cause the 3rd party resellers won't back it up like Dell will.

Are you buying directly from Dell? They're currently offering a $100 rebate on the Dell Inspiron 8000 notebook.

If you're going to play games on your laptop make sure you have the 32MB ATI Mobility M4? 3D Video, 4X AGP and at least the 15 inch SXGA+ (1400x1050) LCD Display.

Laptop RAM prices are really cheap now so I would only get 64MB RAM if you can, it will save you about $100 over Dell's outrageous prices.

Otherwise it looks like you're getting an awesome machine, this is a great desktop replacement. Remember it won't be light but the Dell Inspiron 8000 is one of today's best laptop models, have fun!

I got the 32 meg ati m4
I decided to save $200 and go with the 14.1

and base is 64 meg
I have a 128 sodimm at home now- which i got cheap(pny)

so i think i have everything covered

did i mention that i am getting a cdrw drive in it

You never said if you are buying directly from Dell?

If you are, remember their $100 rebate and don't forget to get this (or you'll probably regret it)
Internal 56K Capable V.90 + 10/100 Mini-PCI Combo [add $30]

It's all internal and works great with Win98 SE, ME and 2000 Pro. Plus it leaves an extra slot open for whatever else. For only $30 more it's well worth it.

in probably less than a month dell will be replacing the rage m4 with the mobile radeon, should be quite a bit faster, since you're interested in playing games.

Dell laptops are pretty good. I think IBM and Compaq are probably the best though. They've also both been in the laptop business much longer then Dell has. That's just my opinion and I am probably a little biased <g>. I do sell laptops for a living (all brands) for what it's worth...
