I have the 866MHz version of this. As of June I'll have had it for 2 years. It's a great machine. Probably Dell's best built laptop. Magnesium alloy chasis. It is built like a tank. I bought mine as a refurb, jacked the RAM up to 384, put in the wifi, and I haven't changed it much since I bought it. Great machine for a student.

i'm wary cause it's a p3 and not really built "for the future".

This is a nice laptop but this deal not really hot IMHO:

older processor,
older (wifi b) card,
no cd
only 20GB hdd (slow too)
and
low memory

make this more like warm.

3 year warranty is nice though

A friend of mine has one for about 2 years, it did not run right until I reformatted the hdd and re-installed everything from scratch (he paid close to 2G though, albeit with 40GB hdd and CDRW and 512MB...)

True. But *because* it's not upgradable, I am also wary of buying a P3. Actually I had my credit card all ready to go, but then I talked about it for a while with my dad.

I realized that instead of upgrading to a P3 1.2Ghz for ~$900 (from a P3 750Mhz), I might as well pay ~$1500 for the 2lb sharp laptop. After all, because the laptop is not upgradable, I'd like it to have a lifespan of 2-3 years. On the other hand, if I was getting this for 1 yr or as a non-primary laptop I think it would be a great deal.

Please feel free to argue, because this deal's still relatively new

it really depends what you're doing with this laptop. this is NOT an "obsolete" laptop.

considering it's an ultraportable, i don't think many people are going to do anything more than email, web, office apps, etc. for those applications and uses, the P3 should easily last 2-3 years (maybe a RAM upgrade).

now if you're thinking of doing stuff that's more CPU intense (video/audio editting, 3d rendering, etc), then you shouldn't be considering an ultraportable in the first place.

btw, $821 is a great price on this.

I probably sunk in around $1600 between the initial laptop price ($1275, including the 8x8x8x combo drive) and upgrades (mobile mouse, case, RAM, wifi card). I might eventually get a new screen, because my screen has a few blemishes (I bought the refurb from UBid instead of Dell...). It really is a great machine for basic office work. If your intended use is internet and office, it's not bad. If you want to do more than that, you'll regret it later. It is built like a tank (arguably as good or better than IBMs X series). This was one of Dells only truly well built laptops.

I have this laptop and got it last year in summer and its as solid as it gets. Everyone loves my comp and envies it compared to their plain looking IBM's. However just becuase it looks good doesnt mean that it sucks in other departments. I have yet to think of a single problem with this laptop. The only quirk is that you might want to have more RAM in it. I use it for Office and aurfing and it does great. It VERY VERY light and people in my lab use it as a comparison against new laptops. Of course you have to get an external CD ROM/DVD drive but I use jump drives a lot and have never missed using a CD. I got it new from dell for $1200 and anyone thinking about this, dont think, just get it. You wont regret it.
