<< Which is a better LCD?

Planar 17.4 Analog BLACK Multi Media SXGA (CT1744Z)
or
DELL Monitor; 1702FP Flat Panel, 17" (17" VIS)
>>

I would say the Dell panel is probably of higher overall quality being that it's a Samsung panel- It's image quality is excellent though I haven't personally see the planar. It doesn't however have the extra .4" or the ability to flip on its side like the planar, so if those features matter then the planar may be a better bet.

I talked to a friend in flat panels today though and he said that they're well into testing the next-gen flat panel displays which he says have a considerably reduced response time from modern LCDs, so if you plan to do much gaming or have to have the latest and greatest (like me ) it may be worth waiting. He didn't know when they would be shipping however and if you decide to hold off, it may be a long wait. Just throwing that out there for the folks who are debating getting this.

Basically the Planar has a higher contrast ratio and I think it has a lower response time. It's also .4 inches larger and I hear Planar tech support is very good.

However, the Dell does have a DVI input and seems to get more positive reviews. It's also about $100 more expensive from Dell.

I went with the Planar.

Are you sure? I am pretty sure Dell only offers one 17" LCD. I use it regularly at work and it has both DVI and analog inputs. As for the luminance ratio, not sure. A coworker working in FPs told me that they use Samsung panels, whether it is the same one as the synchmaster is another story.

Wow, underclocked, you got a sweet deal.

Also, I have the Dell 1702 monitor, and it's really sweet. No dead pixels, no brightness problems, just some clipping when playing a game or video. The planar is better for gaming, but since I'm a coder I need to have the dvi input, which makes text really really sharp.

Damnit guys! Here's what I have bought from Dell in the past couple of days:

The LCD\P4 cmbo (cancelled)
P4 2Ghz, 256MB PC800 RDRAM, etc. ... $929
NEC 17" LCD - $606
and now ... 17" Dell 1702FP for $589

Suppose I'll need to call and cancel the NEC monitor tomorrow! I really wanted the DVI, so it looks like I'll get it. Then again, this is Dell ... we might all have it cancelled!

Here are the specs on the system (good for $929? No monitor or Speakers):

P4 2.0 Ghz Northwood

I don't get it, I try to order the $429 Dell 15" LCD (E151FP) , and it only gives me 5%!
Plus, the $50 off doesnt show!
Anyone else having this problem?

Apparently there are some sorts of problem with Dell's web site which (depends) gives you the 20% off and the $50 off (system purchase) at sometime but not at other times.

Their rules are quite confusing.

The $50 off system purchase is definitely an pricing error (it is supposed to be only given to system purchase, but in fact it works on any thing more than $500 and is stackable).

On the other hand, the 20% off dell systerm upgrade is somewhat tricky. It seems to work (at least for LCDs) for only 17 inch Dell LCDs, but not 15 inch Dell LCDs, nor any other brand LCDs (no matter the size).

So, keep trying and it really depends on your luck.

I also think the $50 off is a mistake, but the 20% off has no problem.
You just need to go from Software and Peripherals -> Dell System Upgrades
Only Dell parts are valid for 20% off.
I have no problem get 20% off any size of Dell LCDs.
Just remember to choose Dell System Upgrades from Software and Peripherals.
People, who got the extra $50 off earlier, were lucky. I don't see it now.

I've noticed lately that it doesn't post until after the following business day after purchase was made. For example, you make a purchase Tuesday Night. You should see the credit Thursday morning!

That's just what I have noticed and I've been buying a lot of junk this month!

Of course, you have to wait a few days. You'll get Ebates once your card is charged and your product is shipped out.

The first step is admitting you have a problem. I, too, am a dealaholic ... so, what's the 2nd step???

Second step is to get out all the credit cards, put them into a blender and hit the puree button :Q

How does the Dell 1702FP compare to a Viewsonic VG175/VA800?
Does the digital input produce crispier text?

I can get the 20% off to show up for the 19" CRT Monitor that starts at 279, brings it to 223 shipped, does anyone know how to get a coupon to work or how to get the $50 instant savings referenced in earlier posts? If I can get the $50 off, I'll have that puppy delivered free to replace my monitor and give my wife mine, hers just died.

I've been at a number of sites, and gone all the way through the online order right up to the submit point, I can get the 20% but not the $50 referenced.

Anyone?
