Someone posted a thread here a bit ago asking about this laptop and well, the thread seems to be gone, but that doesn't mean I can't post one .

Okay, I purchased a Dell XPS M1530 laptop on Tuesday and received it on the following Monday (for anyone curious about my turn-around time). I only chose standard shipping, but it looks like it literally came to me in 2 days or so, which is nice.

The laptop I ordered was a mild configuration:

Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2Ghz
3GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM
nVidia GeForce 8600M
WSXGA+ TruBright screen (1680x1050 resolution)
DVD+/-RW (sorry, no $400 blu-ray drive )
85W 9-cell battery (the bigger one)
250GB 5400RPM HDD
Bluetooth
Dell Wireless A/B/G adapter (rather than Intel's Wireless N... so it's technically not a Centrino)

Overall, I'm fairly satisfied with the laptop. I think I might've gone with Intel's Wireless N adapter if given another chance... mainly because I trust Intel's hardware more than wherever Dell got their adapter from. I might also go with a double battery combo instead of just one large battery. As you know, the bigger batteries tend to stick out from the bottom like a jacked up car and this one is no exception.

I do have some complaints about the laptop although they might be a bit minor and some aren't Dell's fault.

1) The ethernet port is 100 Base-T not Gig-E. Frankly, I have a gigabit network and I'd rather have Gig-E. Not to mention, Gig-E isn't expensive and I have no idea why it isn't supported. This made transferring WoW to my laptop take 20+ minutes instead of maybe 5. For the most part, this won't matter unless I want to transfer large files in a hurry.

2) The touchpad isn't well designed. Personally, I'm typing this up on my HP laptop and I actually like my HP's touchpad better. The HP touchpad has a ridged scroll area on it that's easy to find and know if you're on it. When it comes to the Dell, there's really no way to tell and I find myself hitting the scroll area a lot. Also, my HP has one vertical scroll area where the Dell has a vertical and horizontal, which cuts the actual cursor movement area down quite a bit. If you use a mouse, this is obviously not an issue.

3) I don't like Vista's hibernation at all. I can't stand the fact that it doesn't tell me that it's going into hibernation. This made my first use of it weird as my HP treats a power button press as hibernation where my Dell treated that as the sleep button. So I had to change the profile for the power button to get that to put it into hibernation. But then, I had no idea if it was hibernating or not, because it just goes to a black screen!

The performance is pretty decent on the laptop. I just tried WoW out and I was able to get 30+ FPS in Shattrath at 1680x1050 with 2x AA and all the settings on full. This is a fairly good achievement as a lot of people lag in Shattrath on normal desktops. Just note that the laptop comes in some weird power setting mode that will decrease your performance by about 10fps. I tend to set it back to power saving mode when I'm not in a game because I don't need the extra power.

The laptop can also handle 720p H264, which is one of the big reasons why I got a new laptop. The video looked weird when I was still in power saving mode (it played but I think it was at a slower than normal framerate which is why it looked a little weird). I'll have to try it again to give a better opinion and maybe use something like FRAPS to report the FPS.

Dell gave me a bunch of goodies with the laptop which was pretty nifty. The certainly gave me a lot more items than I got with this HP laptop. There's a nice leather case for your CDs and other things that has the XPS logo on it among other stuff.

As for the screen... it's a 15" with 1680x1050 resolution and I have no problem with it (I initially thought it might be like a PSP's tiny eye-strain-o-vision).

The laptop also includes HDMI if you want to hook it up to your TV. Although I don't know if it sends sound out since I haven't tried it yet. I'll have to try it sometime and report back.

Any questions?

Well I'm jealous... but three questions:

1. How's the audio quality of the speakers? Personally I find the placement and quality of the speakers on my E1505 meager at best.

2. Mind running 3dmark or benchmarking some other titles? Alot of people lately have been posting threads about gaming laptops so it'd be great if we could get some benchmarks on the new GPU's out.

3. Pics Please?

Oh, I forgot another Con about this laptop... I think this is my biggest complaint.

4) The media buttons are absolute shit. They're touch sensitive kind of like Sony's PS3's buttons, but they do not work well. I'll push the button and it won't register half the time, not to mention, there seems to be no way to actually hold the volume button (my most used button) and have it scale the volume down or up gradually... you have to keep attempting to press it. Completely worthless. If I had a pair of headphones for it, I'd just use the on-the-line volume adjustment instead as constantly going to the system tray to adjust the volume with a touchpad is rather irritating .

How is WoW with it?

World of Warcraft isn't too bad. One of the reasons why I chose the 1680x1050 resolution is that's the same as my desktop. This made for easy transitioning of settings files in-between PCs. My old laptop has a smaller resolution so things would be squished together when I transfered the settings in the WTF folder. As for WoW performance, I loaded up my Shaman who's mid-air in Nagrand. With all settings on high, 1680x1050 resolution and 1x AA, he gets around 32-40 FPS running quite a few add-ons (all depends on where I am). With AA on 8x, he gets around 21-25 FPS. I usually just leave it on 1x anyway as there isn't too much of a difference unless you look closely.

I'd say they're alright, but I don't expect much out of laptop speakers to be honest. The placement on my HP laptop is pretty poor as well as the speakers are the front of the laptop. That's not a bad spot if you're watching a move or something, but when you're typing, your arms get in the way. The M1530 has the speakers at the far back of the base of the laptop (i.e. the bottom part, as I consider there being two parts, a base and a lid). I turned on some DJ Tiesto and the quality was alright. I just turned on a movie and really the only problem is something you'll get with all laptops... the speakers are literally right in front of you, so no matter how hard you try, you don't get a sense of "surround sound." I'd probably use headphones to be honest... I'm so used to them that I miss that nice directed audio.

I ran the latest 3D Studio Mark 06 on the laptop and my desktop to give you an idea in the difference in performance.

My desktop:
Intel Core 2 Q6600
4GB OCZ DDR2 800
Gigabyte P35-DS3R
GeForce 8800GTX*
WD Raptor 150GB

*Note: The graphics card is having issues so this score may not be the proper representation of the PC's overall speed. Pay good money and you can't even get a quality product these days .

My Desktop achieved 10969 3DMARKS. Pretty poor but I also never turned off extra processes as I still had crap running when I ran it... so it would change a bit if I had a fresh restart and shut extraneous things down.

My M1530 achieved 3846 3DMARKS. A low score was kind of expected because of the GPU only being an 8600-based GPU. It's not really designed for gaming as much as the XPS Gaming laptops are (they use the 8700).

Even the 8700M is a sham... It is just a higher clocked varient of the 8600m GT. Anyway, the nice thing about laptops is that their screen size is so much smaller and thus don't really need AA at their native resolutions.

It would be cool to run your desktop in 3DMark 06 with 4xAA/16xAF and then run your laptop with just 16xAF and then compare their results. I am guessing the gap will close significantly.

Anyway, I have been playing WoW on my GMA 950 laptop and it works finally actually... 30fps in almost all areas except heavy cogestion. View distance on max, all other settings on low @ 1280 X 800. Did an AV it came to 5 FPS at times, but I still manage the top 3 on damage meters for a warrior!!! Never done that before on an AV, and here I do it with a slide show... Hehe...

I would try it but I don't own the software so I'm stuck with the default settings .

Wow. The 1530 is a good deal. I configured one for $1600. Identical specs to a Macbook Pro, but it looks nicer and has 3 year warranty including accidental damage. You'd have to be a fool or a fanboy to buy a Mac.

Another minor quip that I have with it is the power cable is too short compared to my current laptop. The longer cable on my HP is just nice and convenient and it's been quite a hindrance on my Dell.

I actually didn't go with Accidental Damage on mine, but after I bought it, I was thinking I probably should... not for my sake as I've never dropped or spilled anything on a laptop, but for some other bumbling klutz that isn't careful around someone else's expensive technology.
