Called Dell, told them what happened and asked how long to get a replacement. Initial response was 7-10 days. I protested and the rep said she would expedite it, but couldn't guarantee how fast due to availability. Bummed.

What bummer! I was hoping to hear from you about it by now, and jump into this ongoing discussion. Maybe you'll be lucky this time, and get it quickly. It's possible. They gold me 7 to 10 and I had it in one day. So I guess it just does depend upon availablity. They aren't necessarily inherently slow. Let us know as soon as you get it!

Hello All!

I just received my 2005FPW today!
The unit looks better than expected, but DELL design is still rigid and industrial; however, they have changed their design theme (dark grey and satin silver).

I agree that the monitor is a little too bright to extended use; my brightness setting is at 0 right now!
I also see the backlight issue on the four corners, but it wasn't too bad and I only noticed it on black or very dark backgrounds.

Im still trying to view DVDs (via S-Video) in their native widescreen format without the black bars, but it doesn't seem to work...

I also have a 20" 4:3 LCD TV and you can tell that it has more screen area.
The whole deal with widescreen is that our area of sight is wider than it is longer.
Although I can't focus on the whole widescreen, my eyes get some sort of closure.
I used to own the older Apple Cinema 20" LCD, where the viewing area seems larger (possibly because of the wider bezel).

I wish the 2005FPW came with an IR sensor and remote.
O, BTW, I got mine for around $550 shipped.

Well after a marathon phone session with dells support this morning I should have a new lcd on it way. Hopefully the corners dont have near as much blead through as this one does, there really should be none. I could see a small amount of light escaping between the panel and the bezel, but having it lit up behind the actual panel is just wrong. I'll let everyone know how it goes..

I'm sure you've got to have better luck this time around.

By the way, does anyone know why I can't send any private messages. When I reply to the people who have written me, the window opens, but then it immediately closes. As far as I know, I don't have any pop-up blocker on. I can see it pop up but then it disappears almost immediately.

For those of you with the 2005fp?

When gaming with games that do not have a widescreen mode, does the monitor give you black bars on the left and right, or does it just stretch the image. Do you even have the option?

What about games that don't even go to 1080 pixels tall, are there large black bars on the side and small black bars on the bottom,... thus creating a sqare image in the middle of the screen?

I'm extremely curious about this too. I *don't* want the games that are running at a 4:3 resolution, or even normal tv for that matter, to be stretched to the maximum space of the monitor. I'd rather have the black bars and correct aspect ratio. I don't have much experience with lcd's and even less with widescreens so I don't know how this issue is normally handled. If it keeps the aspect ratio, or at least has an option to, I'm jumping on this monitor the next time I find another dell coupon.

Since no one was nice enough to answer this question I can answer it now that I have mine.

Good news, you can force the correct aspect ratio via the menu. At default it's set to "fill the screen" mode where it will stretch your 4:3 games. However a few buttons via the menu and you can set it to use the correct aspect ratio, giving you black bars on the left and right side of the screen for 4x3 games.

This monitor lists for $799 on DELL's web site. I just saw a post from RMXXXer who says he got it for $550 shipped.

What do I have to do to get such a price?

Thanks a million. With this info I'll be taking this monitor into serious consideration. This is exactly the info I was looking for!

I have a HORRIBLE backlight problem. It is in all corners, but there is this one place on the top and slightly to the right that is so bright that it shows up in anything that is slightly dark. I'm returning it and hope I get a better one.

No dead pixels and it is gorgeous other than the one spot. No ghosting either.

Probably got one of those 25% coupons off the dellf game + a stackable -~$50. Word is the dellf game at http://dell.eprize.net/dell/dellf/ is giving out 25% off lcd's if you happen to win it. I tried for the first time today and didn't.

If you got that price by other means RMXXXer, please share!

I guess with any LCD, even the best ones people have mixed results.

For my color porfile setup i used the nvidia control panel and nview, one thing to note is that "overlay" is actually what affects your video/wmp. Full screen video i dotn know what it does yet, i havent seen it affect anything. Desktop is straight forward although i didnt need any adjustment personally. If you have a CRT as well nvidia has a calibration screen that will give u a good comparision.

I am still very happy with my purchase. CounterStrike widescreen rocks. headshots with a colt at long range has never been so easy.

All you really need to do to get that price is find a used 25% off coupon, and get a current stackable ~$35 coupon and call in and give both codes to a dell rep and theyll set you up with it at that price.

BTW regarding the backlight issue since I'm sending this back anyway I asked myself, what would happen if i press on the corners where its extra bright? Well suprisingly if you press on it it actually changes the light output from the backlight through the lcd, but only at the corners. Additionally I was thinking well if i push on it its gonna make it brighter (Closer to the backlights), so what happens if I pull it away from the lcd, would that fix the problem? I got a suction cup and played with it on the screen, and also suprisingly if you pull away from the lcd on the corners it makes it brighter too. So that leads me to believe there must be some perfect middle point where its the right color, if its off at all in either direction the colors are messed up. Sure hope the new one they are sending me works properly....

Would the 2005fpw be even narrower than a 19" LCD? if that's the case, does it give u the feeling that it is small?

There are some great pics of a 2001FP next to a 2005FPW at hardforum Link Also this monitor rocks minus the corner bleeding problem if I can get a unit that solves that I'll be in business.

It's wider than a 19" but less tall than the 19" It's height is just a tiny big more than the 17 inch. But I quite agree with Hikari. It doesn't really doesn't appear small ... unless you have another monitor along side it and can see how short it is. That's because it's so wide.

I believe it really depends on what you do and how you work. I think people who use some conventional applications (excepting spreadsheets) and, of course, the browser ... which can't take advantage of great width, these people might actually prefer the 2001FP to have the extra height over the extra width.

Does anyone know what flavor DVI cord connection to connect a Geforce 6800 card to this widescreen? DVI-I-to-DVI-D or DVI-D-to-DVI-D?........

How long is this cord?

My desktop is quite a bit away from my monitor.....

Well, I have to give Dell credit. They came through and delivered my replacement monitor overnight. The one I received yesterday was damaged in shipping.

The 2005FPW is one nice monitor. Text is sharp and colors are vivid. I do have some backlight bleeding in the top lefthand corner. However, I don't think it's bad enough to warrant sending it back. And no dead pixels that I can see so far.

I did try to run the Monitors Direct calibrator. After I select the test, the next screen tells me what to look for, but no test is run. Is there a key to press to start the test? Anyone else have a problem running the Calibrator?

Edit: Just played a DVD movie and the backlight bleeding at the top left is worse than I first thought. Not sure what to do.
