Hi!

I need a bit of help.
I'm about to upgrade my old 18" (viewable) CRT monitor.
Initially I was almost sold on the Dell's 20" 2005FPW but then I found this sweetie , the 23" L2335 by HP.

I'm a gamer and would mostly use my new LCD on games. I usually play Half-Life 2, CS:S, FarCry and Doom 3. You get the picture. Every now and then I would pop in a DVD and watch it on my computer.

Here's where the confusion sets in, though. I've been reading this forum and others and have been trying to educate myself on widescreen gaming.
The HP L2335's native 1920 x 1200 resolution is nice but I highly doubt even my PNY GeForce 6800 (regular version) would push a game like FarCry to playable FPS. Or even HL2 for that matter.

Maybe I would have better luck with Dell's 2005FPW 1680x1050 native resolution playing those type of games.

Either way, my question is, could I play games on lower (widescreen) resolutions than the LCD's native one? To be able to play at acceptable framerates and maintain a true widescreen format.

Thanks in advance!

My relevant specs:

HP Pavilion 763n Desktop PC
P4 2.53 GHz
1GB PC2100 RAM
PNY GeForce 6800
and so on...

ummm will the dvi cable that came with the lcd work with my 9600xt dvi out? It would be expensive to get a converter.

After putting in tons of fake emails i finally got the 25% off lcd. Now its time to decide....2001 or 2005. Such a hard choice, someone help convince me.

I heard some ppl had the back light problem with the 2001fp too. So that shouldnt affect your choice. Personally I got the fpw for movies and occasional games. Programming would be so sweet on this, with windows lined up side by side, or dual monitor

Btw, what resolution options will be there? Will the text be too small if you use the largest resolution?

The L2335 is purely business . . . not good for games

which is weird . . . why would they put stuff like component in there?!

Not according to this thread.
I don't... looks pretty game-worthy to me!
And why wouldn't it be. It runs at 16ms. Of course it won't be very playable at its giant native widescreen resolution without looking like a slideshow. That's what I'm trying to figure out, if games can be adjusted to play at lower widescreen resolutions which would make them more playable.

I've actually seen the display in action

A 6800Ultra was powering Farcry at that resolution

very choppy

Yes on the 2005FPW there IS a ~1260 x ~700 ish 16:10 resolution you can play games in that will scale to full screen and looks fine, thats what I've been playing CS:S in since theres no way my 9700 can handle 1680x1050.

1024x768
800x600
640x480
640x400
512x384
480x360
400x300
320x240
320x200

Really?
1260 X 700 eh? I wonder what that looks like... It doesn't look too low res? Prolly looks more close to 1024 x 768 which is what I play all FPS games at and runs fast on my sys.

Is 1260 x 700 a real widescreen res? Would be great if you had a screen shot of this sort to look at.

Thanks!

I went and checked in HL2 the exact res's underneath 1680x1050 the panel will do at 16:10 aspect ratio are 1280x768 and 720x480. 1280x768 looks fine, obviously its not native but to my eyes it looked good.

Yeah 1280x768 is fine if you don't have the power for 1680x1050. It is the correct aspect ratio, and the quality is fine. I've tried some wide screen ones below that res, but things start looking goofy under the 1280x768 res, but if you have a monitor this big, I'd hope you have the horsepower to at least handle the 1280 one.

Interesting. The only option in 16:10 for me is 1680x1050. Similarly, the only option under 16:9 is 1600x900. This is with a BFG 6800. What video care are you using?

The 1280x768 for me was on the Radeon 9600 Mobile on my laptop. I have the BFG 6800, too, and I'll see what resolutions under 1680x1050 I have with that one...with 66.93s. I have done 'update driver' on the "Plug and Play Monitor" that windows calls it by default, then pointed it to the .inf file on the Dell CD, though.
