It's obviously completely hit or miss on these and I'm starting to get a bit dissapointed.

Anyone would be disappointed with that number of pixels. That exceeds the number in the published policy for returns for dead pixels by a country mile. You should call them and let them know what a large number you received. I'm actually surpised it made it through the QC process. One innocent question, don't get upset? Did you clean the monitor to make sure that none of the problem pixels are not just dust. They are probably not dust, and I assume you cleaned the monitor to make sure. I'm just curious if they really let a monitor get through QC with that high a number of dead pixels on top of all the stuck ones that you had.

Hang in there though, and try to get another replacement. Follow the suggestion by Bullishdad and ask for one shipped to you overnight. It's your second one, right? If so, you shouldn't be asked to wait a long time, at least not terms of the shipping part of the wait. You'd be surprised what can be done, if you simply ask the right way.

Yea I made sure it wasn't dust and such, twice actually because I couldn't believe how many pixels were dead. I am getting the run around with dell's email support so time to call and wait on hold for an hour =) No big deal as long as I get a good quality one in the end, I really prefer the widescreen aspect for gaming.

Damn it.

That is a bummer and just plain unacceptable.

Good luck on the NEXT replacement.

Wish me luck on mine tomorrow.

Well my 2005FPW just arrived tonight and I have it all hooked up.

When I first hooked it up I scoured the monitor for the backlight issue so many people have said they have had and I didn't appear to have any issues, then I moved into the Dead pixel test and I thought I had one bad pixel stuck on black. Luckily it was dust. haha.

However, now that the monitor has been on for a couple hours and sufficiently warmed up, I can see that I have a slight backlight problem in the corners but it doesn't affect my viewing or do any discoloration. My D800 laptop has more backlight issues and my Viewsonic even has a little.

To tell you the truth I had never noticed it before on any of my flat panels until I started reading these message boards about it, wish I would have never read about it.

I am curious though, what is Dell's policy if this becomes worse. I will keep it since I have no dead pixels and I can't tell the backlight bleed unless I'm on a complete black screen, even dark DVDs look fine. If it does get worse six months from now, will I be able to return it?

Now, for anyone who is contemplating on getting this monitor, DON'T! It's freaking INCREDIBLE! I can not even begin to explain to you the clarity.

It completely blows away my old Viewsonic 17.4" Flat panel, and also my 21" Sony Trinitron G-520.

I moved my Sony over to my Shuttle box now, and I'm running dual flat panels, this 2005FPW as my main in the native 1680x1050 and my Viewsonic in 1280x1024 (in portrait mode). The Dell is on the DVI while the Viewsonic is hooked up to the D-Sub on my BFG 6800GT.

What is so amazing, is that in this dual config, I can play DVDs on the Viewsonic (watching Evanesence now) and play WoW and Counter-Strike Source on my Dell.

The clarity is undescribable. I'm happier than my three year old this Christmas getting Thomas the Train!

The picture quality is a little bad, I'm not a professional photographer. I'll have the wife take better ones later....

This is in the dark with WoW loaded on the 2005 and Rivatuner running on the Viewsonic...

Then this next one is with the flash which kinda blocked out the screen but you get the idea of the setup.

It friggin' SWEEEETTTTT!

Thought I'd post an update.... I finally got mine yesterday. A00 December build. No dead/stuck pixels and no significant blacklight issues. It's quite a bit brighter than my 8600 with WUXGA which I thought was pretty bright for a laptop.

I'm happy, especially considering I got 30% off on it.

Try the NEC-MITSUBISHI BRIGHTNESS CONTROLLER. It works quite well.

I think the A00 December models are definitly higher quality then earlier ones. I just got my 20" last night and it has no dead pixels and just a small amount of backlight issues.

Read my above post about my replacement, it's december built =)

I'm really starting to get upset at dell, both phone and email support are refusing to setup an exchange for me, the last person told me to call up sales for pricing information (wtf) Guess it's time to move higher up the chain

I'm so happy I found these reviews after I bought mine. Mine is probably sitting out in the rain/snow as we type/read. Call me estupido, but how or where do u do the dead pixel test? Is there a program that just displays colors on your full screen or something? What is the over/under on how many dead pixels I get. I'm putting my money on 5.

One other thing, not sure if i'm in the right area to ask this, but what video card do u suggest getting for the 2005FPW? I will using her mostly for Adobe Premiere/videos/dirty movies, not gaming. Have AMD 2.3 and want to spend ~$200 on card.

Thanks in advance, u guys/gals r the best!

Hey, for those who returned one, how the heck do you send the old one back? They didn't send me any RMA info in the replacement, it just came with a packing slip....

Oh, and as an FYI, my good replacement is Dec 2004, the backlighting issues one was November 2004.

You guys are more than a little over the top on this REV ... new ... old business. Mine was an early unit and it's just perfect, no backlight and zero dead pixels. Why must there always be some kind of drama to all this? There are good units, better units, and bad units. That's the way it's always been, and that's the way it always will be.

That was my point sadhu, build month doesn't mean anything. People seem to be getting either a good one or a bad one regardless of when it was built and its just the luck of the draw.

I'm upset about the cs I'm getting over it =)

Ah, I misunderstood. Yes, I quite agree with you on that score. Sorry to hear about the CS. I've not had that problem, but then, I've not had to test the CS system in a long time.

I did have problems getting some speaker bars returned. I thought they stunk (the sound was pittiful), and so I returned them. Dell was supposed to pick it up, and scheduled a pick up three different times with FedX never showing to pick it up. The only good thing was that CS checked up on whether they picked it up, and finally scheduled a pickup via another carrier.

horay for mostly perfect monitor! there are no dead pixels [from my quick inspection], and there's only a minor backlighting problem. i thought it'd be nice to share a good story, and i hope that dead pixels don't develop over time [heard some stories about that, but i don't want it to be true]. the revision number is A00, and it was made in Dec. 2004. best of luck to everyone else.

I have been using my 2005FP for a week or more now... .Holeee hell... it's frikken awesome! Best monitor I've had so far.. better than any freakin CRT I've had or any other LCD... you'll honestly wet yerself. The only challenge is to get older games to run widescreen. If you don't care much for them... it won't matter. I have Quake3 running widescreen... took a few minutes to get used to it..ahahaha... but it's waayyy cool.

Bright, clear, crisp, perfect... very faint backlighting in the corners but if there is something on the screen you don't notice it at all. It's a definate keeper.

a change: i've noticed that when playing movies [especially shrek 2], it seems as if there is a giant flashlight going on all the corners. i'm so disappointed. i know that people would scoff at the fact that i am disappointed because of backlight problems when there are no dead pixels, but this is important to me, gosh darn it! i've spent a good chunk of change, and i would like to think that i will be satisfied with my purchase, and that it will not bother me in the future. btw: never, ever buy a first edition of any car. ANY car. it might seem ludicrous, but we could always try to petition dell to create monitors that have no backlighting issues - aka, we mass return all of them at once . i'm tempted to request an RMA, and then have them send me an overnight replacement, to see if i can get one with no backlighting problems. however, my more reasonable idea would just be go out and buy a short-depth CRT, and just be done with it.

what number/email address are people using to ask for an RMA? i searched around the website for a while, but i couldn't supply a service/case/whatever number, so no chat, and the only phone number that i found was the general technical support. could anyone be so kind as to reply/pm with what information they are using?

I'm glad yours are working well with minor/no issues. =)

I had my doubts if my 2005fpw "adventure" could get any worse. After about an hour and a half on the phone I finally got ahold of a supervisor who apoligized for the panel's problems and assured me they would ship me a replacement overnight. Fed ex pulls up in my driveway and drops it off and I cross my fingers hoping for the best.

Then I noticed the box was different than the original one mine shipped in. After examining it I noticed the lovely words "Refurbished" on the label. For kicks I opened it up and checked it out and wouldn't you know, it doesn't even power on.

Unbelievable.
