The 2005 is less than an inch wider (16.96 vs 16) but at the expense of almost 1.5 inch in height (10.6 vs 12). Its total surface is also roughly 6% (180vs 192) smaller than the 2001.
Could you help me understand why I should consider the 2005? I spend my time this way:
70% progamming
15% gaming
15% word and excel work
0% watching movies
If 85% of your time is spent in regular apps, then ask yourself if you use multiple windows, and whether you will have a lot open at one time. Also ask yourself about how you like to layout these windows ...one above the other or side by side? With one monitor you gain height and lose width, and with the other you lose height and gain width. If you don't already have a preference, you might get used to either one ... and it's a coin toss.
Personally, for regular applications, like programming, and Dreamweaver, and Photoshop, etc., I find I am in the same camp as Skylander. Re-read Skylander's comments. He packs a number of valid points in there. The one unescapable impression when you have them side by side is that the 2005 looks like a 17" monitor (in terms of height). And therefore, really looks tiny. I find that I also prefer to work with a monitor that doesn't have the height of a 17" monitor. Even the 19" monitor would be better in this regard (and by the way, the Dell 1905 has an 800:1 contrast ratio (while the monitor that everyone is talking about here ... the 2005FPw only has a 600:1 contrast ration). The ture advantage of the 2001 is it's 1600x1200 resolution and it's good color saturation. Perhaps the whites are as pure but that without looking red, green or blue, whites are good on the 2001, and it's also not overly bright.
I think that my iimpression was and still is that the 2005 might be a smidgen too bright, even after turning brightness down. There are subtle differences between the two, and it would be mistake to say, I believe that the 2001FP is the "old" model, and that the 2005 is the new improved deal. That's jumping the gun a little. One thing is for certain, however, size and proportion is different. So, here, the choice needs to be personal one.
