Dell new 20" wide LCD 2005FPW. Has anyone seen this beast?

I'm just really trying to understand if some blacklight bleeding is normal with LCD's or the monitor should be solid black?

using an lcd for the first time, you will immediately notice how much brighter it is than a crt. give it a week and you'll adjust =)

I actually saw both the 2001 and 2005 yesterday evening, and I prefer the 2001 over the 2005.

It helps others if you explain why you prefered it. I've seen both and I prefer the 2005 here. For some reason I like the widescreen, and I thought the 2005 had a better picture.

When you say "better" picture, you should be specific. Exactly what did you compare, and exactly how was it better? The "better picture" is so vague, and it doesn't really convey how critical your appraisal was. Is it just a subjective appraisal, or did you actually compare specific aspects of the "picture." Even the term "picture" is a little vague. Were you looking at videos or stills? Where they photos? What in the photos were you comparing? Did you see more detail? Did you see detain the highlights or the darker areas. Was the picture better because you thought the colors were truer? Perhaps you thought the colors more vivid (though not necessarily truer. You see what I mean? We don't glean all that much from a simple statement that the "picture was better."

I don't discredit that a subjective appraisal can be valid, mind you. It's just that it's more helpful when getting critical that the statement becomes a little more self-explanatory. Otherwise, it's not that helpful as a jumping off point for discussion. We all have our preferences, but knowing what yours is or why you like it better can prove more helpful to those who are still trying to figure out whether they should buy either the 2001 or the 2005. Let's leave out the Widescreen equation for now. Why do you like the picture better? I'd be interested to hear what both of you have to say on this score.

I used the amex coupon and 25% off and it worked. $450 bucks must be wayy below their cost lol.

I couldn't find a way to change WMP9 to use more of the screen. Sorry I couldn't help you solve the problem, but at least you know you're not alone with it.

UPDATE:

Replacement monitor up and running. Received it in 3 days. 2 stuck pixels, one possibly dead.

Keep it yes/no?

I mean honestly my 2001fp that I am currently selling has 9-11 stuck/dead pixels.......

I can say I have NO backlight issues at all. Just 2 stuck pixels, one blue and one green.

Is it worth the trouble to get another one!?!?! over 2 stuck pixels?

ScottFern: Only you can say if it's worth you trying again with a replacement. How much does it bother you? If the answer is "not much" or "I barely notice it" than I say keep it. If you instead say "OMG it's all I see!!!" then you'll have to risk Dell CS again.

Just to add another data point to the discussion here, I got my 2005FPW yesterday and I already know that it will be going back for a replacement and/or refund if they hassle me. Severe backlighting issues on this monitor in all four corners, especially the lower left where the white light extends fairly close to the middle of the screen. As a test, I ran the WinXP standard black screensaver and it is quite clear during this just how bad the problem is. The left side of this LCD is especially bad as in testing with UT2K4 that side of the menu screen the colors appear all washed out. Real shame too, as without that it'd be a keeper - not a single dead pixel or other defect/problem that I can find. Just rediculous amounts of white light bleed-thru on any dark background. Definately some quality control issues going on with this model.

As a side note, does anyone know if you can handle returns/exchanges with Dell via email? I'd rather not deal with their wonderful phone support if at all possible. Only gotten canned form responses so far... guess I'll call if I don't hear from them soon.

I have it on fairly good authority dell's cost is around $525 for the 2005FPW so yes, at $450 dell is not raking in cash, however I believe American Express does partially subsidise this loss so in fact you not loose sleep about dell losing money

yes you can do returns/exchanges via email. I haven't returned monitor via email but I've returned other stuff via email. I don't bother with the phone. Too much time and hassle.

I prefer email as well. In this instance though, Dell sent me an auto-response letting me that I *should* get a response in 48 hours.

SERIOUS WORD OF WARNING! BUYER BEWARE - OF DELL!

DELL was once a company I trusted, back in the 30 day money back guarantee days. Now I feel taken, tricked and ripped off by them. I tired to return my 2005FPW for a refund thinking that the 21 day return policy started from the day you received your package. WRONG!!!! The 21 day period starts from the day they ship it. Doesn't matter how long it takes to get to you once it's marked "SHIPPED" on the invoice! (It took 7 days to get here leaving me only 14 days to make a decision, which of course I was unaware of.) I was basically told by customer service, in so many words, TOUGH LUCK - "You should have read our return policy. I can walk you through the links on our website to where you can find it." Talk about the "fine print."

Meanwhile I specifically called the Sales Department the day after I ordered the monitor online, to ask if I could return it in 21 days if I am not happy with it. "No problem, you can return it in 21 days." The guy never said 21 days "AFTER it has shipped." I feel I was misinformed and mislead by this sales person and the damn customer service person I spoke to today could care less. I'm two days over the 21 day limit and they won't make an exception. Now I have to keep the damn monitor or make an exchange (which I'm going to do because it has noticable backlight problems).

I also ordered a 2001FP which I love, is absolutely perfect and I don't want to return (it's within the 21 days since shipping) but I am not in a financial position to pay for both monitors. Perhaps once I get a decent exchanged 200FPW I can sell it on eBay. If I ever get a decent one.

Sorry about this long rant but I am so unbelievably furious at Dell. I will never buy from them again.

Well, they're going to be loosing some money on me too cause I just bought an AMEX $150 for $50. Problem is I still cant afford even a $450 monitor , so it will be going on ebay for a hefty profit (unless I can sell my samsung 900 nf). Boy its going to be hard not to open it .

I worked thru support@dell.com & they sent me a brand new replacement even though I was (just by about 4 days) outisde the 21 day limit. Seems the technical support people will work with you a little more than the sales and customer support people. I thought I had 30 days also. Was suprised when I read the 21 day limit. (Note, they also sent me a $100 rebate for DSL even though I sent in my rebate info about 2 weeks late. No complaints here !!).

Sorry to hear about your experience. To have just 14 days is not a 21 day policy. Dell knows when you received the monitor. I suggest you ask for Dell's Resoultions Department. I find it hard to believe Dell really wants to lose a customer for life over a misleading policy. Try to be calm and nice as this was an innocent misinterpretation of how many days you had. Tell them you want to have confidence in Dell for your future purchases. Good luck.

The 2001 just seemed like a more natural viewing screen. The 2005 was a bit hard on my eyes at first. It's hard to explain, I just found it much more pleasurable viewing the 2001. The 2005 I saw had backlight, but it wasn't as bad as some of the cases others here have seen. I'm going to order the 2001 in the New Year, but unfortunately, I can't use the DELL Coupons because I live in Canada, and the 2001 is going for $999. If anyone knows how to get this cheaper in Canada, please let me know.

962 after coupon: 129.99

2005fp after coupon: 449.99

I dont think dell made a dime off me lol. Its ok though, our family has spent alot of money on dell comps/laptops before I found out about coupon codes.

just unpacked our 2005fp....sweet... if there is a bad pixel i don't see it... when its black, screen has some whiteish to it but not really bad (best I can do for description) ...don't look at the black screen much anyway...

mine also has a minor backlight issue. but i always thought alot of lcds had this problem to some degree.. at least my laptop has this issue slightly as well. i think its easy to get with lcd technology.

but my experience is like drifter106's, its not that bad. at least, mine does not seem nearly as extreme as some screenshots posted.
its mainly the left side. if i was to buy again for $600 or so, i'd do it knowing it would look like this.

compare to other brands and see if you like their prices for similar LCDs.
if someone was entirely anal about the backlight (i play doom3 and i dont notice unless i purposely examine every frame), they could keep doing the switcheroo..

im convinced some ppl will never be satisfied with LCD technology or a LCD until one is absolutely perfect.
to those i say, buy a 100lb CRT and enjoy.

I compared my 2001fp to the nec 2141 my friend ordered. Even after calibration I still prefer the 2001fp.

I plan to try a 2005fpw in a few months after they work out all the backlight and pixel problems =)


Gizmotion - I would keep pressing the issue, some people you get at dell will do absolutely nothing and the next person you talk to will jump through hoops to see you happy.

It should be $899 for christmas. Check the Redflagdeals forums if there are any new deals on it. All I know of is a 5% off coupon for Canadian university students (check the forums).

Hey folks Marry Xmas

I need your thoughts on this. Am I being to picky about my monitor? I have no dead pixels, the only time I can see the blacklight problems is when I have a solid black desktop background and the lights are off in my room. The real problem I'm having is I have never seen another LCD monitor except in stores and this one. If this is normal I'm cool with, if it's not then I feel I should get what I payed for. For myself 600 bones is a lot of money.
So, I ask you folks the experts.
Do LCD's by default have some blacklight issues?
When in a dark room (black desktop background) should I see some blacklight from all 4 corners of the monitor?
