Guys, I suggest running some ambient light and just cranking brightness to 100%...ambient light should help get rid of those headaches =p
After all, what's the point of buying a monitor with the latest and greatest brightness specs if you can't crank it?

Plus when I'm watching movies on this thing (and how could you own this thing and NOT watch movies on it...it's...freakin' perfect for them!) I don't have to recrank brightness =) Most movies have very dark scenes so you'll want the brightness turned up...I actually think in some movies/shows it's still a little too dark, but the video card drivers help me even that out...

Anyways...my friends are impressed by this thing...makes them drool watching me play WoW =)

Now, to upgrade my video card so I can up all the settings hehe...my Ti4200 can run WoW playably but it's not really optimal and it's not really right to have such a kick-butt monitor hooked up to an aging video solution is it?!

What is your point? Most of us are able to multiply and figure out basic math.

If I'd wanted a 2001fp or whatever I'd have gotten one, this is the 2005fpw thread.

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to share a good story to go along with all the bad ones.

I got mine two days ago, ordered on the 12 (the day the 30% SB coupon expired) and received it on the 18th. It's a Rev. A01 from Mexico, built in January '05.

The backlight is almost non-existent, maybe a small amount on the upper right, but nothing terrible. So far, I've watched a dvd and a couple xvid files and it looks fantastic. I haven't run any games yet because my PC is pretty ancient (P3 600 with TNT2 64), but I'm definitely going to upgrade now because of this monitor.

I had a slight problem getting it to run at 1680x1050, but that was not the fault of the monitor. It was either XP SP2, my old video card, or a combination of the two. See my other thread below for more info on that.

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...key=y&keyword1=2005fpw

Overall I'm extremely happy. The build quality is great, the picture is awesome, widescreen rules, picture-in-picture rocks, and the convenience of the built in USB hub is awesome too. (I can hide my USB bluetooth adapter behind the screen so it's completely out of site.) For the money, it can't be beat.

All in all, I'm more than pleased.

**Please read** Those who have the 2005fpw

*Problem with hardcoat anti-glare coating*

I have the new Dell 2005fpw and a 1901 (dec revA00). On a bright or white screen, the 2005fpw anti-glare coating is very visible, to the point of being annoying. I have barely noticed this on other monitors, and it appears the 2005 has a special coating on it. I'm in a dark room. Anyone else noticed this? The monitor looks great with darker colors on the screen, but bright colors make this stand out. Looking at pure white just appears grainy. On a positive note WOW looks great on this monitor. Thanks for your input.

I have this monitor and have a mostly white wallpaper, I don't notice anything like that. I too am in a dark room, of course its not so dark with this and a 2001FP in it.

What I really can't beleive is that none of the major hardware sites have posted a thorough review... Talk about site traffic. This thread alone has 21,454 views, not to mention the other smaller threads in General Hardware. I'm not surprised this thread has lasted a long time. Anytime you can purchase a screen this nice for under $600 (with coupons) it is news. Personally, I wasn't in the market for an LCD when this thread was started, but now I've owned one of these monitors for 3 weeks. There is a bit of backlighting, and the viewing angle isn't as good as some LCD's I've seen, but the overall picture is fantastic and it's a great gaming LCD, especially for the money. I really don't like my Sony CRT I have at work anymore after using this at home.

When comparing the 2005FPW to a CRT, side by side, for GAMING, their is no comparsion, a CRT is much better for games. And not just any CRT, an NEC FP2141SB-BK, or Mitsubishi Diamond Pro.

When your playing a game on the 2005, it looks good, good enough for people to think, "Wow, this thing is awesome!". BUT, when you look over and see the same game on either of those monitors mentioned above, you'll be like, "Oh, well.....what the hell!?". And than you'll realize what your 2005FPW really is, a cheap LCD.

At least this was what it was like in my case.

I'm not sure what else you need... Agreed that gaming on any LCD is not the same as gaming on a CRT, but overall, I have to say that I prefer my 2005FPW to my old Nokia 445Pro 21" CRT. The 2D picture is much clearer, and the response time for the LCD is certianly fast enough for gaming. And widescreen rocks! I've played quite a bit of UT2004 and a lot of HL2 Deathmatch on this monitor, and I have no complaints in regards to ghosting or smearing. Originally, Dell had sent me a 1905FP by accident, which I tried out as well. With it's 25ms response time, it was awful for gaming. No comparison to the 12ms response time of the 2005FPW.

Edit: of course there are preferences and different levels of sensitivity to different things. For me, most LCD's I had seen prior to the 2005FPW were not acceptable for gaming, but this one feels fine to me. Of course, opinons may vary. The fact of the matter is that the cost of a high end CRT (such as the ones you mentioned) rival or exceed the cost that you can pick up the 2005FPW, but you really should get what makes you happy.

I just got my 2005FPW today and have it running off my laptop for the time being (in the process of building a new system as I type, as in, got all the parts here and I'm assembling everything right now!) and it is such a beast. Without a doubt, this is a beautiful display - I am completely blown away, and the fact I got it for $521.75 just makes me even happier, although I might be getting it for $0.00 since, for some reason, Dell has not actually billed my account yet... go figure. I'm sure when some bean counter notices there's $500+ missing in their monitor division sales figures, something will click, but if it doesn't, I guess free 2005FPW for me.

Do you mean the 2005 or 2001? It'd be the 2005 hands down, its wider which would allow you to see two pages side by side better.

Got my replacement. Jan. A01 revision. Unfortunately, the backlight is worse than my Dec. A00. No dead pixels on either one.
Is it a problem to return the replacement and keep the original? When I requested a replament I remember giving them the serial number of my lcd. Any thoughts?

A4 width at 100% will not fit on 2001FP. It will fit side by side on 2005FPw. I prefer the 2001FP monitor to the 2005FPw, and for that reason, I have two of them in my office. That's the way to fly if you can afford it, in my opinion.

I might add that the gaming issue aside, the 2005 is quite wonderful for 2D applications such as Word, and I'd much rather use this "cheap LCD" 2005 for such applications than my $3000 CRT. It's much more sharp, and less tiring on the eyes. In every way, the 2005FPw would be worth the price for your office application. If it's too bright, then simply use the Nec-Mitsubishi Brightness control. In a very brightly lit office (with lots of windows of the non-microsoft variety ... that let lots of light in) you'll be very happy that the monitor can be as bright as it. In the evening or on overcast days, you can use the little brightness utility from Nec-Mitsubishi.

I just got this monitor. Backlight issues arent bad. The upper right corner has some bleeding but its not bothersome. 0 dead pixels. What is bothering me is the antiglare coating. You have to look at this monitor dead on or you see it. Also how do you adjust the contrast? Its greyed out? Also the phase and pixel mapping is greyed out. This is pissing me off cause i want to adjust the phase. Can anyone help? I cant imagine you cant adjust the contrast on this thing.

Zepp:
I went through around 6 replacements and kept giving them random serial numbers from whatever I had laying around, and I actually kept the second monitor I had received the entire time and they never complained.
