Hello guys,

I am interested to buy the 2005fpw monitor and I will probably do that on Monday, although I have in mind those 'worrying 'issues' ...However, I worry most from the one that some people talked about, and that was 'brightness'..too much brightness. I have very sensitive eyes and when I sit in front of my CRT my eyes get irritated after half an hour. Could someone please tell me if the 2005fpw is good or bad at tiring or not someone's eyes?!

I too have sensitive eyes, and CRTs bug me after using them for a couple of hours, but I have no problems with this monitor. I can use it for hours and not have a problem at all. It is a very bright monitor, and I even have Digital Vibrance Control to halfway (making colors even more bright/brilliant), but it doesn't bother me. I used to get horrible red eyes from using CRTs, I don't with LCDs in general (esepcially mine, which includes this monitor).

Marinos,

If you don't wish to take my word for it, there are others in this Forum who will backup the fact that the NEC-MITSUBISHI BRIGHTNESS CONTROL utility, which you download, and then install to the toolbar in the botton right hand corner of your desktop, will do the trick. Once installed, you have a sliding fader control that you can access which will adjust the brightness of the monitor.

Thanks for your replies darkswordsman17 and Sadhu. Sadhu, let's say that you don't use that NEC-MITSUBISHI BRIGHTNESS CONTROL utility (which I will probably use) can you sit in front of the monitor for hours and still your eyes feel comfortable? Now, if you use the utility and control the brightness then everything is ok with your eyes? And what about the colours and contrast when you lower down brightness? Are they good?

..and something else. The monitor does not have its own utility to control the brightness as much as you want?

You can adjust the brightness of the 2005FP on the monitor. One of the front buttons opens a menu, where you get brightness and contrast. If you're using DVI you'll only be able to change brightness, if you're using VGA, then you should be able to change both.

I hesitate to answer your first question with complete confidence, because I don't really know just "how sensitive" your eyes are. I don't have any problem sitting at the monitor for hours, and neither does my daughter ... who's the main user of this monitor (in my office I have two 2001FP monitors). But, I don't really have a problem with my eyes hurting, and neither does my daughter who primarily works in the late afternoon and most of the time, after dark. She doesn't use the Brightness Controller and I use it only slightly (I only use the fader just a tad).

I shoudl mention that I've already lowered the brightness all the way on the front of the monitor using the brightness adjustment available on the front of the monitor. To see the controls avaiable with the 2005FPW you can take a look at the User Manual which is up at the Dell site:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/2005FPW/

If you go the 2005 manual online, you'll see what you can adjust. Note that when press the (-) button, which is the third button in from the right hand side, a screen pops up that lets you adjust the brightness.

The reason for the utility becoming a topic of conversation here on the forum was because some people said that when it was turned all the way down, it still was too bright for them. I loaded the controller utility more or less out of curiousity rather than feeling it was REALLY necessary. I think it's fine without it. But I have it installed, and still have it turned down a hair using the controller.

But I could see a use for it for some. Not simply to turn the brightness down beyond what's capable using the Dell control, but for ease of use for turning the brightness up. In other words, during the day, when you feel you might benefit from more brightness, and even want a little more, say on bright sunny day, when the light is streaming in the windows, then you could use the Brightness controller. To do this, don't turn you monitor's brightness all the way down to Zero. Instead, leave the your Dell brightness setting at 10 or 20 or even 30 percent. When you've done that, use the =NEC-Mitsubishi brightness controller to get it where you like it during the mid-day or evening. In the day, simply reach for the fader on the brightness controller to TURN UP your brightness. It's faster than using the controls on the Dell. And I don't see any disadvantage to this practice.

Contrast also seems fine even though there is no adjustment for this in DVI mode. Contrast adjustment is only available in the Analog mode. Do I think this is a problem? No. I think the monitor looks great, with both color and contrast. You can tweak color settings using the Dell's front panel controls.

I'm not the only one who likes this monitor and think it's worth its price. There are a lot negative comments on the site, but then, if you read the entire thread (good luck), you'll see quite a lot of people think it looks great.

And so, yes, even with the brightness turned all the way down on the 2005, the color and contrast is great and the experience is very very nice, nicer than big expensive 21" CRT. Everybody around here likes it.

Do I like the 2001FP better. In some ways, yes I do. But then, I'm not a gamer - so the response time is not an issue for me, and I only watch films on large home theatre. I'm not one for watching video on a small screen, and I consider even 24" too small for me to watch DVDs. Call me old fashioned but I like my movies BIG.

Good luck with your purchase.

I've got REV A00 and A01 running on multiple screens right now. I just got the A01 today, I see NO differenece in my 1st one. The A01 has less, or no backlight bleedthrough, compared to the 1st, I think. Maybe not, who cares they both look identical and still have a backlight that is too bright, giving it that "grayed out" look someone above mentioned, HORRIBLY for Doom 3.

This monitor was cheap for an LCD, which is exactly what you pay for, a cheap LCD. I'm keeping either of them, I'm going to get a 22" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro, or NEC FP2141SB-BK instead. Those 2 are the ultimate in CRT gaming.

I must also mention that there is a slanted vertical streak of blurriness on my A01 that makes text blurry. It's really weird. And yet another issue that could arise with this monitor.

If you don't do a lot of gaming or don't care if your games don't look close to perfect, than this monitor is .

I can't find any drivers for the ATI on my laptop either. Let me know if you can find a way to get it to work.

BTW--Just received my replacement monitor. It's a REV01, with no stuck pixels, less backlighting problem (but still there a little). This one's a keeper.

There's a sticker on the back of the panel listing date & location of manufacture, as well as revision.

A4 width at 100% will not fit on 2001FP. It will fit side by side on 2005FPw. I prefer the 2001FP monitor to the 2005FPw, and for that reason, I have two of them in my office. That's the way to fly if you can afford it, in my opinion.

I might add that the gaming issue aside, the 2005 is quite wonderful for 2D applications such as Word, and I'd much rather use this "cheap LCD" 2005 for such applications than my $3000 CRT. It's much more sharp, and less tiring on the eyes. In every way, the 2005FPw would be worth the price for your office application. If it's too bright, then simply use the Nec-Mitsubishi Brightness control. In a very brightly lit office (with lots of windows of the non-microsoft variety ... that let lots of light in) you'll be very happy that the monitor can be as bright as it. In the evening or on overcast days, you can use the little brightness utility from Nec-Mitsubishi.

Thanks for an excellent answer Sadhu, it looks like it will be a 2005 for me then because i havent got the money for two 2001 side by side.

You'll be very happy with the 2005 for your office A4 documents. It's really nicer to view documents than a large CRT, more "crisp" and less fatiguing on the eyes. I can't see how you would regret it for the price, and even price aside, it's really very nice. I don't miss my 2001FP monitors when I'm woring on it. I just love working with two monitors. You get spoiled very quickly. But that aside, you'll find your A4 docs will fit with just a tiny bit of room to spare.

If you work at night, the darker room will allow your eyes to open take in more light, so the brightness of the 2005FP might require the NEC-Mitsubishi Brightness Controller, if your eyes are sensitive. Don't forget to download from the Internet (since it's free).

My 2005 is great cept for one dead pixel .. Bloody things are SO annoying to look at.. I will be looking at a web page or whatever and for some reason my eyes keep drifting to it as if to check if it's still there. I think I'll name it..... maybe Delly the dead pixel or something.

Anyone with brightness issues try this application:

Puts a little slider in your systra that lets you finetune your brightness to whatever works for you. Works on any monitor, CRT/LCD whatever.
