<< >>>I run my Dell P991 at 1280x1024@85 I haven't tried running anything higher because my eyes can't stand it.<<<
Then that confirms that the P991 is not equivalent to the Sony CPD-G400...on the G400, 1600x1200 @85hz is near-perfection. And the Compaq P900 is even better at the same resolution. >>
Then why does the product description read?
Monitor; 19" (18" Visible) White P991Trinitron monitor
19 IN, 18 IN, 0.24 mm, 1600 x 1200 pixels, 107 KHz >>
Whenever the refresh rate is put in KiloHertz, as opposed to Hertz, you can assume they are quoting a figure for something more complicated. In a somewhat simplified explanation, what they are quoting is something like the number of pixels the monitor can output in a second. This is split so that at higher resolutions, the refresh rate is lower, while at lower resolutions it is faster. Toms Hardware has
this to say about it:
<<
Note that a key factor in the quality of a monitor is the acceptable horizontal refresh rate. Here, we can distinguish between five classes of monitor, based on optimal refresh rate at a given resolution:
85 kHz = 1024 x 768 @ 85Hz
95 kHz = 1280 x 1024 @ 85Hz
107 kHz = 1600 x 1200 @ 85Hz
115 kHz = 1600 x 1200 @ 92Hz
125 kHz = 1856 x 1392 @ 85Hz >>
Note that no monitor has 107kHz refresh rate, that is merely a way of clarifying what it can do at different resolutions in one number. Refresh rates are stated in Hertz, which is refreshes per second, not kilohertz, which is thousands of refreshes a second.
Ive been using the Dell Ultrascan P991 for 2 years now and its great. I had a bad experience with it about 3 months ago when I installed a new graphics card and windows would only recognise it as some CTX monitor(it would run 1024x768 @ 48 Hz) but I downloaded the drivers(.inf files really, Windows 98 FE had one for the P990, but not the P991) and now it works great again. IMO the two scan lines that hold the monitor together(Since the mask is nothing but a bunch of vertical lines, there is no horizontal stabilization, necessitating stabilizing wires) are barely noticable. I can locate them if I try, and on a white background they look like a very thin light grey line. On other colors(anything darker than the grey that is the background to these forums) I cannot see them at all. This monitor can run @ 1280x1024 @85Hz and 1600x1200 @ 75Hz, and this is a great price for it. BTW, this monitor IS COMPLETELY FLAT, I can notice no curvature whatsoever. I have a similar non-flat trinitron (forget the model) in my other room, and it is always weird working on that after getting used to the flatness of this one.
In Summary: Great monitor, totally flat, great refresh rate, and perfect price.
