This is the exact same deal they had two weeks ago, with the exception of the MIR.

Nice find.
Got one!
No MIR == no anxious waiting.
Sure, Dell MIR is probably as safe as you'll ever get but it's nice not to have to wait a couple of months for the savings to arrive.

good deal, one thing people don't seem to know about these systems though is they sometimes have problems running in ultra dma on all 4 ide channels, the primary ones run fine, but slave hard drives i could only get to PIO2, which is garbage, your luck may differ. Luckily i had one of those pci cards to add ide channels laying around.

i'm seeing a ship date of 9/23, thats a pretty long wait, guess you could cancel if something better comes up in the meantime.

While I'm waiting 3 weeks for ship date, anyone know of a decent ECC memory upgrade? I've read the FAQ, I'm asking more about deals than memory specs. I went with the 2 x 128 default config.

Thanks!

Good question. I haven't been able to hunt down any ECC PC3200 memory either. BTW, I bet you went with the default memory config, it cost an arm and a leg for more memory in this thing.

I guess I would recommend dumping the ECC memory that comes with this system and just buying new non-ECC. At least if you want to run a gig of ram or more.

It does however let them say things like: "In Quarter 3 we fulfilled all X million orders sooner than projected" or some such.

I bought a 2001FP last week with an original ship date of 9/1...They called me yesterday and said that the ship date would have to be pushed back to 9/17. =(

Hey... since they don't ship until then... do they charge it to your account now? Or could I order it now and worry about the money on that date. (Someone at work is wanting it and won't have the money until the 15th). Thanks for the info!

I dont see how these are really worth it.

As you can build a better pentium 4 system for about $50 more with 512 PC 3200 ram non ECC with a bigger hard drive, and better case.

Good Case = $50
Good PSU = $30
2.8Ghz CPU = $175
Intel 875P Mobo = $90
256MB PC3200 = $45
CD-ROM = $20
Mouse/KB = $20
40GB HDD = $40

Equals roughly $470. I don't see how you could do it, in fact this case and psu are actually pretty good stuff.

+1 Year Warrenty From dell on everything
^I think thats another good selling point here...if you build your own your taking a bigger risk and usually CPU's are only for 30 days through most companies (speaking retail here)

+Really good QUIET cooling system
^the other HUGE selling point, you can spend $100 and STILL not have a machine as quiet as this one

Its doable, with some sacrifices in quality and your own time. And I would be really freaked out if someone started talking out of my ass...

I guess my point is, people generally don't talk out of other peoples asses.
Seriously though, I was agreeing with you. Yes, you can get really cheap p/s, good case, FAR cdroms and nearly free hd's, refurb'd processors and mobos. and you would have to wait around for those deals to come up. Some people are into that, but time and quality of product are worth more to others.

Meh, I consider any warranty from Dell worth about a penny. Truth is, I hate Dell's tech support and customer service. I used to love it, but I had a horrible experience with them once I and I was so fed up, I ended up building my next computer, which worked out really well.

I was on the phone for a little over 3 hours trying to get a hard drive replaced. I had my customer number, order number, everything. I talked to 7 different people in three different departments. I was so mad, I went and had a beer at lunch (I was at work when I called). I had to close my office door so people couldn't hear me yelling and cussing.
