If it has an Intel motherboard, it automatically detects the CPU so you don't "accidentally" overclock it. The pins on the cartridge give the FSB information.

oops, forgot to put in the message!

We have a lowrise desktop GXa at work and haven't been able to use "reguler" DIMMs in it. Must be a Dell special ram or something? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Kimchi (and everyone else)

My university refurbish's computers when they are cycled out and places them in the community. Some Dell 66mhz bus p2s have been really picky about ram, although I don't remember if they were Optiplexes or Dimensions. (The optiplex is the corporate line, more stable configurations usually with more carefully tested hardware). Check the size of the dimms as well.

Thanks for the offer, but working at Dell has its advantages.

Good luck finding others though - it's definitely a solid deal

This is great for a linux server without X.

Also, Mandrake has a new cluster ready Linux for download.... It would be fun to buy 10 of these and build up your own cluster at home. Watch out the eletricity bill though.

$30 shipping to PA...no thanks.

Great deal for the cpu but I am not paying that much for a box to mess around with.

Box came in yesterday. Stuck a IBM 20 GB HD in it, Win98se, and a stick of PC100 64MB Ram.
Works fine. Booted up using the windows drivers. Haven't tried the sound yet, and I'm trying to
network it to another computer, connected with IPX/SPX protocol, still trying to connect with TCP/IP.

Nice little spare box for the wife to play with.

Damn good deal for a complete system, they are quite slow, but they would be useful for a barebone server.

ya if you can get this with low shipping like mani did this would be good for a router/firewall. i've been wanting a dedicated file server for a while too.

I hate to threadcrap. Please don't take it as such.

I have two of these boxes, they're test machines at work. Both are Dell GXa PII/233, just as advertised. I scavenged them from a drop-off area in the hall reserved for abandoned machines set out for PC-recycle.

Both boxes are highly unstable. At first I thought maybe it was a screwy install of the OS, so I tried several more times...on each machine. I tried Win95, Win98SE, ME and 2K. Didn't matter, they would blue-screen on reboot after installing the OS, the anti-virus, corporate firewall software, or other software. Sometimes they blue-screen simply by dropping a clean image and booting. I'm not the only one...my company bought quite a few of these boxes, everybody has the same complaints, everybody tosses them out first. Nobody wants to deal them.

Another thing...these are P6 machines, but for some reason 32-bit operating systems run slower than the 16-bit kernel operating systems. Never seen anything like it. I have an old P5/166 running Win2K that spanks both these machines in both perf and stability (24/7 for 3 months now).

They are $50 for a reason. I dunno if it's the mobo or the RAM or a combination of the two. Maybe it's something else. Maybe you'll get lucky and get a stable, fast machine...but everybody I work who has used these boxes can't wait to get rid of them...which is why you can always find one at the end of the hall in the "junk pile" every month or so.

Slugbait:
The machine I got has been the most stable Win98 install I have done (about a dozen).
Not one blue screen. Installed ATI-TV Wonder, works great. Added 64MB of PC100 ram, generic.
Norton Systemworks 2002, Diamond SupraMax LE installed flawlessly.
Thoroughly happy with it!

Like I said, maybe you'll get lucky. Good for you. Personally, I've built or used (literally) a ton of "the most stable" 98 machines over the years, and the Dell GXa didn't turn anybody's crank where I work. I'm only pointing out personal experience, and that of about 12 other people on my team.
