These are available for $49.99

I bought a couple for a client and they looked nice. I put a larger hard drive and loaded windows 98 on them. The drivers were easy to get from dell.

did you also order a Dell Optiplex GX1 Pentium II 400Mhz Desktop System and a 17 inch monitor?

if so you may want to change that link

~ HOT ~

This would be a fun way to spend 50-70 bucks. A fun linux toy or viriied program tester.....whatever. Would be fine for storing MP3s or videos next to your home theater.

nice find.

What sort of SDRAM does it take. Also, any info on the mobo itself, chipset?
Thanks!

dell being quite possibly the least standard company out there, doesnt use a single standard case in every single computer they sell.

the new dimensions have some funky case with 5 expansion slots, that resembles ATX but with 5 slots. all the others use a passive backplane. if this were the older dimension XPS series, with the old palo alto designs case, it'd be an even better deal. for $50 its not a bad linux machine or door stop or web box.

This is tempting. I wish it was the small desktop case instead so that it could fit in my entertainment system easier. Also, it appears 333mhz is the fastest processor it supports. Specs

And here's the link to specs/tech notes for those who don't want to register with Dell support just to view those specs...

A note of warning: I have an early model of this Dell, and the Pentium II 333 upgrade did not work. But the Dell Optiplex Upgrade Page gives you some other options.

Other than that, it's a nice machine. If shipping didn't half-kill the deal ($30 UPS Ground to NY) I'd get another one for friends who don't own a computer.

Hey! For $50, it would make a great cheap DOS controller for NC drill machines, etc. There are lots of current industrial apps that have timing problems on newer, faster machines. For example, I have written routines for a DOS based audio test system. It runs great on my 486-DX4 and DOS 6.22. It runs OK (but with some strangeness) on my Athlon 650 and DOS 7 (Win98 SE), but it locks up tight on my 1.33 GHz T-bird.

For another $20, it includes a 2.5 GB HD. This is a great deal if you can use it, and you don't have access to an even older machine at a lower price (including shipping).

OTOH, they'd have to pay me the extra $20 they ask to take a copy or Win 95b off their hands.

I just tried a Pentium II 333 CPU in the dell and it worked just fine. I thought I would need to move the speed jumper, but it jst saw the different chip and adjusted itself. Explain that?
