I think this is a pretty good deal. I just did it. Here is what I did:

- Go to Dell Small Business
- Click on Servers, Storage, Networking
- Click on Choose PowerEdge
- Second column is PowerEdge 1400SC, click on Customize It
---> PIII 1.13 GHz
---> single CPU
---> 128MB SDRAM
---> no operating system
---> 48X CD-ROM drive
---> click on 36GB 10K SCSI drive (add $100)
---> free second hard drive 36GB SCSI
---> one year warranty (subtract $497)
---> add keyboard, mouse (they don't add to the price)

Leave everything else as it is, total should come to $599 with free shipping (but plus tax).

Use the 10% off coupon (found everywhere), total is $569, including tax (for me tax was $30)

There is a $100 rebate, for a total of $469 for a dual-CPU-capable server with two 36GB 10K SCSI drives!

SCSI drives alone could cost almost that much depending on what brand they are. Great deal for someone looking for a server/ non-gaming machine.

this is pretty sweet, remind me the Gateway 6400 deal awhile back.

but this will be better than any gateway's server!

Wow, I could get those two drives, throw them in with my 18.1gb cheetah and sell my WD 120gb SE!

One of the reasons I bought it is because I have a spare PIII 1.13GHz, same as the one in the server. But I was wondering if it has to be exactly identical (stepping, etc.), or it could be different? Anybody with dual CPU experience?

You might need a BIOS update for it to work properly. You can check Intel's website for stepping compatibilities.

Mismatched steppings work fine-the system will just use the feature set in whichever is the older CPU.

I actually got this deal awhile back... if you do a search on the boards you should be able to find it.
Theres a listed sku for the part you will need to install your second chip, as this server supports dualies ;-P
I personally got my 1400SC with 1.1ghz duals in it.......
JUMP ON THAT as a dual is undoubtble a better deal...
I belive the link is:
Dell 1400SC dual thread
I hope that sweetens the deal for everyone!

I think even for a lot of simpler systems a 4 drive IDE RAID shows the best bang for the buck.

That being said I love my 1.4 Terrabyte Winchester Raids I have at work.

Er, technically speaking, you might be able to rig the first VRE to service the 2nd CPU slot if you had the schematics and a soldering gun.

You would have to deal with the passive cooling shroud as well.

fornax,

I believe BobOki was talking about the part number to purchase the VRM from Dell, not the CPU. It'd be nutz to buy the CPU from Dell ! :Q

Yes, you're right. BobOki, thanks for the link to that thread, I'm calling Dell to get the VRM,

It is hot for the server but if you're just getting it for the drives alone it's not hot. You're using the onboard SCSI for that price so if you move it to another computer you're going to have to get another one. It doesn't say what brands the HDDs are but the 36 gb IBM 10k SCSI hard drives aren't that expensive. About $164 each.

fyleow, the MB also seems to be a very nice one. The ServerWorks one that's supposed to be in that server sells for about $300-$400 just on its own. Of course, I doubt it that Dell buys it for that much

ONLY 512K Tualatin CPUs are dual compatible. You'll be screwed if you buy the cheap 256K cache P3 Tualatin CPU.

I'd say go with something more than the 1 year warranty, it's not like you can replace the mobo or backplane if it goes out unless you buy from dell at a heafty premium.

For those who want to put a second CPU on it, the VRM Dell part number is 7G041, I got one for $15.80 shipped. Don't get the 11GEF, it's for the older servers made before 11/2001.
