Dell PowerEdge 2400 Server for $1299 plus tax

Goto Dell Small Busines and select the minimum conf, you will get PIII733/128MBRAM/9GB for $1299. I ordered one two weeks ago and it's $1421.

Btw, When I got the server, (it's a very upset story, it's so heavy that I hurt my back and I have to stay at home for this whole week) However, I found it's using SCA SCSI HD. The worst thing is where could I get those brackets to mount the HD? Any Idea?

What, exactly, makes a Desktop or Tower PC a "Server"??

super huge cases. The 2400 series is a very nice case. We have 4 of them here at my work. I would assume it comes with the dual slot 1 motherboard too.

dang this is too funny as for the drive brackets call up dell and have them look up the part#'s for you and they should be able to get some there about 10 bucks a pop. I have about 15 of those 2400's in my company just got done ripping one apart to steal the backplane out to put in a different 2400.

Servers generally come with redundant power, (or the ability to add it) hot swappable raid, hot swap pci, better system monitoring, etc.

You can get the Poweredge 300 for $825.00 plus tax and tags..err..shipping.

Not too bad considering its dual ready and with SCSI drives.

IBM used to have machines that had none of these advantages, and still marketed them as "Servers"

8595 is one that comes to mind right away, but that was also before RAID became mainstream in the PC world.

a. 300 is based on BX and you have to get a VRM for 2nd CPU. The good thing of 300 is 1). cheap 2), you can get a good IDE raid.
b. 1400 is on ServerWorks LE and it also needs VRM for 2nd CPU.
c. The main reason I got 2400 is it doesn't need a VRM for dual CPU (it uses slot 1 CPU) and the case is very nice (hot plug). Unfortunately, I didn't think about the HD brackets. And SCA SCSI makes the HD non-universal.

Does anybody know where to get VRM for PIII? Try to get another server to build a web/app server.
2400 is good for a small-scale DB server.

Dell really sucks! I tried to adjust my price, I called twice, the first time I was redirected to the Tech Support. The second times I was redirected to unknown lady's voice mail. Does anybody know Michael Dell's email?
