Dell Poweredge 2600 Performace Problems

We have a Dell Poweredge 2600 running Windows 2000 Service Pak4. System runs extremly slow!!!! We did all of the necessary checks for viruses, adware, etc.... When observing Processes, Performaces, and networking tabs in Task manager, everything is normal. I only notice that when installing any application, or navigating in and out of windows,the system operates slow, and it takesliterally days to complete the install. We even tried to restore the original image, and the image takes day to complet the install as well. Any thoughts, we are at our wits end for a resolution.

Is the hard drive running in DMA mode? That could be the problem.

That's an old server... I thought a 2600 had the Perc2 scsi raid controller.. if that's the one you have , it's very slow compared to today's controllers.

What exactly is your config: cpu's, mem, hd subsystem ??

You may want to get a new server because more than likely Dell doesn't even support that server anymore hardware wise.. if you loose the controller or hd's your on your own..

Build one yourself like I did, check my 2 servers.

Hi,

These make pretty decent systems, though slow by today's standards. However, days for an install means there is something wrong.
Did you go through the bios? Make sure you don't have the cpu cache turned off if there is an option for that. Also, go to Dell's support site. Type in the service tag of the server. Download and install any updated firmware; bios, controller, ESM etc.... You can even download the installation CD which might fix things up for you.

Maybe you lost a drive in the raid setup and are running off 2 drives ...
