for the basic configurations, with celery CPU, 128 ECC, and 40 GB harddrive, how much would it be if i build it myself. Is it really that good of a deal? I think i can't really get the mobo from dell, but lets just say similar configurations mobo. I think it might be a little more. Any thoughts on that?

It looks like they changed the MB - no AGP.

According to what source? The AGP slot has always been "unsupported" in this model, and Dell has never mentioned it in the description of the PC.

Ok. I do wish there were a way to confirm the MB. I would love to get in on this deal.

I'm looking for a media server, so the 600sc's 4 1" drive bays for some 200GB drives sounds roomy to me (though I'm not sure how the 250W PS will hold up)...

I currently have 1-yr old 600sc with 4 drives in it and it's holding up pretty well. These dell PSs, even though they are only 250w, are EXTREMELY high quality IMO and can handle a whole lot more than your average 250w raidmax.

If the 600SC is the same as when I bought mine 9 months ago, it's the ServerWorks Grand Champion SL chipset. No AGP, but onboard gigabit. 3-channe IDE.

I ordered this on 12/3 at the $249 price. What a good deal.

I call Sunday to see when it was to be shipped and they said the order was cancelled because I entered 09/2005 instead of 09/2006 as the expiration date on my credit card. If I had, seems like they would have sent me a email on it. but the didn't.

Tried good old customer service to get the order reinstated, but they won't give it to me at the original price.

Any Suggestions?

I would keep calling back till you find a helpful CSR. Same thing happened to me on the Lcd deal but persistance and a few calls finally got the order reinstated.

I grabbed one of the 400sc p4-2.4's a few weeks ago. The shipping gave me whiplash! Before the confirmation email arrived, the server was already here. 2 days delivery and that was on a weekend! The 400sc does have AGP (not sure about this newer variant) and I am still shopping for a good deal on DDR400. Will probably grab Kingston HyperX as it appears to be good sticks with a decent price. Is SATA striped ATA? Any good links for setting up a SATA? My box came with a 40gig seagate and I already had one here so may try my hand at it this weekend.

Ps: this is the quietest box I have *ever* owned. Huge diff between this and a screaming thermaltake on my Athlon 1800+. I keep having to check for a light on the box to make sure it is runing.

SATA is Serial ATA - you'll need a new HD and a new cable to take advantage. It might be slightly harder to set up because you'll need to load drivers when installing the O/S (similar to SCSI). It probably won't be of much use to you right now unless (a) you get a 10K RPM model like a WD Raptor, or (b) you absolutely have to have the neatest, cleanest case as the cable is very thin. Because they are not as ubiquitous as the traditional ATA drives, you won't be able to find them as cheap right now, and if you do go the performance route, you'll pay significantly higher cost per megabyte.

And you're right, they are very quiet and very nice machines. The case is very solid also.

I just purchased three of these about two months or so ago and they are very quiet and indeed solid machines. I am very disappointed in dell though because something happened and one of the parts on the case got bent a little and the case wouldn't open or close anymore. Dell told me too bad, the case is not covered in the warranty. I had to basically rip the part out of the case in order to get it to work and now my case won't latch. I'm not too happy with them.

I wouldn't expect them to replace a "bent" part... it's most likely something that happened in shipping, or something you did. If it's the former, then you need to file a claim with the carrier. If it's the latter, well...
