Not sure when it ends, but I checked my order this morning and it says that it shipped! Still waiting for the tracking number to show up. I am hoping to get it by Friday, but we'll have to see.

Check your e-mailbox. Yesterday I received a Dell Small Business coupon for 10% off, expires today.

Edit: Bah! "Cannot be combined with other discounts or coupons"

I don't know if you can mix ECC and non-ECC ram.

I have two crucial sticks of registered 256 PC3200 DDR non-ECC ram.

Can I remove the 128 module installed by Dell and use my two non-ECC crucial sticks in this machine?

Sweetness,
Mer.

If U read the spec of this memory, it would say if you mix the two then it will become non-ECC. ECC is use for error checking. If any of the RAM is non-ECC then even the ECC one will switch to non-ECC.

And of cause the ECC is more expensive. But the non-ECC is more popular and cheaper so you can get more. If I were you, I would go with the "more" which is non-ECC. Windows really sucks on these memory so if you don't have enough then it'll slow down a lot.

For best results, do not mix ECC and non-ECC. Yes, it works - sometimes, but I wouldn't do it in a system of mine. You can remove the ECC and use your non-ECC, which should run in dual channel if you put them in the correct slots to enable dual channel.

I picked one up for $400.00 including shipping and tax - $100.00 rebate = $300.00

I will add a single stick of 512MB DDR ($50.00 @ OfficeDepot) and add a black CD-RW/DVD Combo ($50.00 @ newegg) and use the 17" Black/Silver Envision ($60.00 @ staples) and a pair of cheap black speakers for a nice system for under $500.00

Question: A site referred to earlier in this post indicated that WinXP/Win2k/Linux/and a few others will run on this machine. Why will Win98 or WinME not run. I cannot think of any reasons unless the motherboard has an issue. Standard Hardware.

Thanks Anandtech HD Forums!

I was wondering if this will take a GF2 Ti AGP card? I think it would, but am not sure on what cards used what voltage and things like that.

Try logging into your account and checking order history (NOT order status). Click on the invoice for your order. In the top right section there should be a waybill number. If your waybill number starts out as 3A*************** then it is going via UPS and you will need to put an "1Z" to the front of this number. Also, they don't get scanned by UPS when they leave the dell facility. They will get scanned once they arrive at the regional UPS center. So the tracking number you have may not show anything yet but check back tomorrow and hopefully it will.

I have a 400SC with a 2.4GHz P4 800FSB that I got a few weeks ago. I added a single 512MB stick on non-ECC DDR400 together with the 128MB installed and I haven't had a problem (yet). I am very impressed with the overall build quality of this machine and it would make a great low-end workstation or file/print server. I say low-end because it only has 2 internal 3.5" drive bays and 2 external 5.25" bays. Inside it is very neat and easy to work with. It's also very quiet. All in all, highly recommended.

It should, but I don't have firsthand experience. I am running a GF4 Ti AGP in one of mine with no problems at all.

More than likely the GF2 card should be fine to work in the machine. Assuming that the GF2 card is likely an AGP 4x and has the universal notches to fit in the AGP slot of the 400SC. If it dont fit then you know it wont work.

Nice machine. I ordered it late Friday night. It shipped out Weds and got here last night. I got the computer before the tracking number! Not bad for free shipping. Of course, I am only about an hour away from Austin.

The machine is great. I added a GB of Crucial memory and it runs like a champ with WinXP Pro. Super quite too!

Can anyone comment on the need for 400 mhz memory? Is performance going to suffer a lot if i buy cheaper RAM?

Similarly, is dual channel worth it? For example, would it be better to go with 256 mb dual channel, or leave in the 128 stick that's there for a total of 384?

Am running XP Pro unhappily on that one 128 stick now, so any suggestions welcome...

Dave.

Got mine today, $275 with the free upgraded 2.4 Hyperthreaded processor. I installed 2003 Server and had no problems with the 128mb memory out of the box, recognized it as a dual processor.

I added a 256mb DDR PC3200 Kingmax clip from newegg in the 2nd bank and it recognized the total 384, no problem.

Super sweet system for the money, even had a floppy drive.

I just got mine last night. I was wondering if there will be any problem, if I install a Kingston 512m pc 2700 along with the 128mb stick that comes with the system.

You shouldn't have any problems, it just won't be running in dual-channel mode. I don't have a percentage figure to tell you how much of a hit that will be, but I know when I turned dual-channel on for my wife (otherwise same memory configuration, just had the sticks in the wrong slots), I couldn't tell a difference via normal activities though I didn't run any benchmarking.

Anyone had any problem with their rebate? I just received a letter from Dell that there is no rebate for my purchase. Just off the phone with dell.rebatestatus.com and they ask me to call Dell but they are close right now.

Am I the only lucky one?

Well just off the phone with Dell customer service, they said there is nothing they can do about the $100 rebate. The best they can do is credit me back for $40. I took the $40 becuase they said even if I can prove there is a $100 rebate it will require me to ship the system back to them and reorder it.

Oh well $335 still a nice deal for me.
