"No, this is not a loophole, this is a scam. Pure and simple. If you called customer service and told them "I want to return the memory and hard drive because I plan to buy them elsewhere" they would not allow you to return them. In other words, you can't return them if you are truthful with Dell. Ergo, it is a scam."

I suppose your comments are targetted at luketrot, but I can not help but take offense to them as well. I told Dell I did not want the RAM in my system, and was going to buy different RAM, but never said where. I still got to return it. Heck, tech support even told me what type of RAM to buy.

I first off don't think alot of people are going to call, second probably half that do call will get rejected becasue they won't be polite or something. and for the rest I dont' see it as a problem. They charged us a set price and we don't want these items I will probably only send in the hard drive and buy another one from dell as they have the one that i want at a good price, I really don't think that is a bad thing if i'm really going to get a replacement part from them. They just didn't offer it as part of my bundle.

** MY LAST POST ON THIS TIRED SUBJECT **

Brian, this guy is a flamer, probably bored...

Kwad Guy, You have the number, call. I would like to hear the laughter on the muted end of the conversation.

Sweet lord, somebody has called and asked if he could return some items he ordered from our website within 14 days!! This is fraud, how dare he.. This deception MUST BE STOPPED. Next they will be returning monitors or even complete systems.. Oh my. How should Dell stop this Madness???

"Total Satisfaction" Return Policy (U.S. Only)

We value our relationship with you and want to make sure that you're satisfied with your purchases. So I emailed Dell, complaining that the 400SC I received was too noisy for the environment I am installing it in, and I'd like to either return it, or I'd keep it if they were willing to either give me some credit or refund some of my money.

The Dell rep offered me $150 credit back on my credit card to keep the box.

$650 3.2 gig server
- $100 Rebate
- $220 for 128stick and 40gig HD downgrade
- $150 for "noise" issue

= $180 of 3.2 Gig Love!!!!

Thanks Dell!

No it was not me that did this. Hahaha Far from it. But it is amusing to see just how far some of these phreaks take this. Ripped from the 400cs forums.

Noise issue? WTF!? I'd like to see how that guy's setup is quieter than this Dell since mine is quiet as a mouse...a dead mouse.

I received a stick of Crucial 333FSB ram (128mb) with my server (3.2). Many got 400FSB ram. I called and explained that I was not going to use the ram I was sent because I had faster (Buffalo PC3200 CH-5). No prob. Sent it back for a $71.67 credit.

Ergo, you are wrong.

My Corsair PC3200 (256mb X 2) doesn't boot with this server, BTW.
Beep code...even with 1 stick. It's on the list as compatable. YMMV.

So what brand name RAM works with the 400SC? My OCZ PC3500 was a no go also. = /

Are you installing two modules in the correct "numbered" slots?

I'm using Kingston Hyper X PC3200 x512KB. Did you make any BIOS changes ie. OS Install mode which limits RAM to 256 KB?

i beleive that the XMS series works, but not the value ram stuff. i haven't tried it, but that's what i heard. anyway, i'll probably just buy some crucial sticks in there. a little more costly, but it's guaranteed to work. if you do decide to buy other ram, make sure to buy it from a place that doesn't have a restocking fee. also, since you can't tweak the memory settings (the 400sc will read the spd on the memory chip), then some memory that has aggressive settings might make the bios set the ram at it's default setting which is pc2700, cl 3 (or sometimes 2.5)

I have OS Install Mode OFF and Fast Boot ON. Also, which are the correctly numbered slots? I can only use the 2 vertical ones it seems, because of the heatspreaders on my OCZ PC3500 EL-DDR. Also, anybody know where i can get what the beep codes/diagnostic lights(letters) mean? I'm not seeing it in any of the documentation I received.

The mobo has numbers next to the slots ...for dual channel you need to pair them one vertical and one slanted ...use slots numbered "one" and "two" for the first two sticks, "three" and "four" if you have more!

How is that memory working for you. Does the bios read it at 400Mhz, and is it cl 2? I too am trying to buy RAM for this machine, but I'm not 100% sure. It seems people are running well with the Hyper X. Not so sure aobut the Buffalo stuff.

It is 2 but reads at CL 2.5 ... Bios picked it right up no problem ...works like a champ!
KINGSTON HyperX 184-pin 1GB Kit (2x 512MB) DDR400 (PC3200) DDR RAM modules, Model# KHX3200AK2/1G

I bought it at NewEgg since the Kingston store charges me tax and NewEgg doesn't. BTW, Kingston has it for 20% off through Anandtech at the Kingston Technology Store

I bought two sticks of 512mb pc3200 ECC from crucial. I will let you know how they work when I get them next week.

Per the 400sc FAQ these types should work...
- 1x 128MB Samsung PC2700, 333MHz, ECC. (Default RAM for 533MHz CPUs)
- 1x 128MB Samsung PC3200, 400MHz, ECC. (Default RAM for 800MHz CPUs)
- 2x 256MB Corsair PC3200, 333MHz, Dual Channel.
- 2x 256MB Kingston HyperX PC3200, 400MHz, Dual Channel.
- 2x 128MB Crucial PC3200, ECC.
- 2x 512MB Mushkin PC3200 Basic Green.
- 2x 512MB Crucial PC3200, 400MHz, Dual Channel.
- 2x 512MB Kingston HyperX PC2700, 333MHz, Dual Channel.
- 2x 256MB Crucial PC2100, 266MHz, Dual Channel.
- 1x 512MB Kingston KVR333/512R PC2700 CL2.5, 333MHz, Dual Channel.
- 4x 128MB Samsung PC3200, 400MHz, Dual Channel.
- 2x 256MB Buffalo PC3700, 333MHz, Dual Channel.
- 1x 256MB Corsair XMS3200C2 PC3200, 333MHz.
- 2x 256MB Kingston HyperX PC3500, 400MHz, Dual Channel.

So does this mean that we are paying for technology that the 400sc won't let us utilize? Or does it mean that even though the 400sc shows it as 2.5, we are actually using it at faster speeds?

It means it's running slower than what it's capable of running at, as limited by the 400SC. I do not know if this is a hardware limitation or a function of the bios. My rationale for using a lower CAS latency RAM that can't at this time be fully utilized by the system is threefold: possible future bios upgrade will let it, the versatility in using it for something else later, and that currently it's only ten dollars more per stick than another "extremely significant" RAM supplier and is considered "high performance" RAM and comes with pretty boy blue heat spreaders.

So has anyone out there been able to find RAM that runs at 400Mhz and cl 2 on the 400sc?

Looks like mine are finally going to arrive tomorrow. (Ordered them on 9/4/03, so that's not exactly tip top service).

They're coming Eagle Global Logistics. Oh great. My last experience with EGL was piss poor. When I was on the phone with the Dell CSR and she looked up my order and saw it was coming EGL, her words were "uh oh. I am SO sorry about that. We have so many complaints when we use them."

Anyone else notice how Infineon is missing from this list?
