For some reason, when I plug four usb devices into the four usb ports in a row, my computer shows a stop error when it loads windows. This doesn't happen when I use the bottom two, and I've checked the ports individually and they all work. I figure there must be some shared ports that can't handle the power that goes through.

Second, my video has been acting up. I think I fixed it by setting the bios to AGP rather than AUTO, but one day isn't long enough to determine if the problem has gone away.

Anybody else?

edit: and by the way, my device manager shows "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller" under Other Devices. I can't seem to install drivers to ged rid of it, although there are four other USB host controllers shown. If you have ideas, please let me know.

Try going into the BIOS and disabling "USB Emulation". I believe it is in the integrated perhipherals section of the BIOS. You would only want the emulation enabled if you were using a USB device that can be used as a boot device (USB hard drive, floppy, CDROM, etc).

Let me know if this works.

Question....

If I put two of these Crucial Sticks in my system...

256MB DDR PC3200

? CL=3 ? ECC ?

CT322513

$60.99 (USD)

Am I going to have Daul Channel 400Mhz Ram? Or ???? Anyone try this yet? I guess for 120 bucks it's a semi cheap solution for ram.

Thanks!

Yes, I have the same RAM (just non-ECC) running at Dual Channel 400MHz. I've also read benchmarks with the exact same ECC RAM and that's 400MHz Dual Channel as well.

Another $.02 from me. I have the same memory as Olliebg...also non-ECC...and it's running dual channel, HT and stable as a rock...gee these boxes are quiet...it's so nice not to hear the drone of a CPU cooling fan...edit...oops...better answer the question, too, its 400MHz, actually, it's frquency shows 199.5MHz...and here's the data (and remember it's quad-pumped so you multiply the 200X4 to get the 800MHz that's flowing through it to get the 800MHz FSB) :

CPU-Z version 1.19a

Thanks to olliebg and his website....olliebg's site...and notice the bug in the upper right hand corner... There's a wealth of information that'll help with any decision to buy this machine or not; however, it provides a base of information from many users and buyers to make your informed decision. Oh, and be sure and make another decision to support (or not) Olliebg's piggy bank to support his site. edit:I'm not paid nor do I know Olliebg...blah blah blah...I read his website and it was one of the tools I used to make the very informed decision to buy this great box...

the easiest and most practical way to tell is set your module into its slot and then use CPU-z's utility, tab <memory>, and it will provide the frequency, in MHz, with which your memory operates. You can then check your numbers against other tests that are provided by SiSoft Sandra. Look at Google to find their free, basic programs that will answer your questions. Whether you're convinced will require further reading and understanding of what these 'guys' test. Good luck!

Well I sent DELL and email the other day to request a return label since my plans for gutting the system wont work because the mobo is totally proprietary and this is what I got in response:

Dear ivwshane,

Thank you for choosing Dell. I received a request for a return of your order # xxxxxxxxx. You stated in your email that it is you received a duplicate shipment. If there is anyway you could find another use or user of these products I would be happy to offer you one of the following: $100 off the price of the system or any upgrades such as software and peripherals for the system valued up to $100. If however you still need to return your order despite this offer that is fine too. Please either e-mail me or call me with your decision. However, I do respond to e-mails faster than voice mails. Thanks again, and have a great day!

So now I don't know what to do.

It's worth the value of the upgrade to the 2.8c, since Dell doesn't offer that one anymore. If you have to account for the shipping costs back to Dell and the market value tonight of the 2.8c over the current cost of the 2.4c that they're offering now, it's $100 +/- or even more...or less...if someone in your town wants it, it's a great deal for them, particularly if they're buying an i875 mobo, P4 2.8Gc, 40G IDE HD, PCI video card...blah blah...if it has an operating system on board when they buy it...it's better than anything I've ever seen. period.

Personally I'd take the cash... a 2.4 @ 250 bucks! Whooo!

Iether that or just take the cash and buy some ram for it. Why would you want to stick this mobo in another case? The only thing I'm gonna do is stick in my 9700Pro and some faster ram.

You could always take the cash then sell the system to someone here or ebay it (GAG)... and make a cool 100 bucks off the deal. I wouldn't return it but that's up to you I suppose. Hack, I have 5 cases and I wouldn't even want to put this into another case. I am not very fond of window cases with 6 cooling fans ... I've been there and done that... Too loud for me. But what ever floats your boat.

My order just got shipped out...
Status: On Schedule, 9/1/2003 11:37:00 AM

Delivery Estimate: September 4 - September 8

I guess someone was working on labor day.

The reason I wanted it in another case is because I already have a main system and I just wanted to upgrade it. Also the DELL case doesn't support all the devices I need it to support; two hard drives, dvd, cd-rw, floppy, memory card reader, sound blaster live ir drive and a mobile rack.

yeah i got this from last time, $430 shipped .

VERY VERY quiet server case, nice case with many good features like drive sleds, cable management and etc. However, if you are getting a high end video card, make sure you have an 'Y' splitter for the molex connector. There is only enough connectors for 2 HDs, 2 CD.

While I didn't get in on the special sale, alot of folks did, AND, they now reside over on ebay. I got one for a few $$ more than I could have gotten direct from DELL, but I will still get the DELL warranty.

Having not gotten one of these due to being on vacation I was bumbed to see what a good deal these were. I started pricing a new case, PS, MB, and processor and was coming up alot higher than I had hoped. I decided to check ebay and there are a slew of these there from 2.4 to 3.2. Well, for $457 + shipping I get a 2.8 400SC. I'm pretty happy about that.

I think I might have to ebay mine even though I don't want to (unless my co-worker wants it). I was thinking about selling it for $450 + $50 shipping, is that reasonable?

I've read in several online forums that Dell is no longer honoring system warranties when they are purchased on ebay. Something you should look into.

One, how would Dell know the system had been purchased through eBay? Two, why would you tell Dell? But most importantly, how would Dell prove it???

Even if the two individuals lived at opposite ends of the country, what's to say that one college student didn't sell the system to another college student? Student A lives in the dorms, but only has a campus P.O. Box - so he orders a system and has it devlivered to his home address (most likely his parents address). Student B buys computer from Student A (after s/he's picked it up from his "home" address), and either lists his college address or home of record address (which is most likey to be quite different). Not that I am taking sides or defending anyone here(*) - I just can't see Dell expending the resources to (attempt to) track this, much less investigate the validity of any such claim by the secondary purchaser. What if one college student buys two systems for him/herself and a room- or dorm-mate because the other doesn't have a credit card? What about purchases for girlfriend/boyfriend or relative? And would Dell do the same if you sold the system through your local newspaper? Where would they draw the line without alienating (potential) future customers?

While I do see Dell being able to track individual accounts that purchase multiple systems, of which all (or all but one) systems are rapidly transferred to multiple secondary owners, I don't see this being a problem if you resell a system on a one-sy/two-sy basis. Dell allows transfer of warranty between individuals, as well as extension of warranty periods as long as the system is still under warranty for a reason. Dell develops brand loyalty through these resales (when they don't screw-up subsequent warranty claims), and they make money on warranties, especially when the secondary owner extends the warranty.

* - personally what disturbs me, is the "duplicate order" claim. Unless both orders were placed at the same time, I'm truly surprised Dell's buying that arguement. And if the systems were bought at the same time, why didn't the buyer make any attempt to cancel/change the "inadvertent" double-order before it shipped?
