It's probably not a big deal if you do one or two systems. I'm just letting people know this is something they should investigate before buying or selling a Dell PC on ebay. Most sellers on ebay are probably doing a much larger quantity than this, and would surely have their email addresses flagged as possible resellers.

ok, 470 shipped..

Credit for $200 returning 128 megs ram and 40gig HD. I had to tell CS that tech was ordering me replacement parts..

Now $270 Shipped (bought 512megs of ram from crucial for $107 works perfectly)

I love Dell..

i've never heard of getting credit by returning items... and i'm assuming that they functioned perfectly but you did it in fact for the credit. I'd love to hear how it works.

When Dell ships [you] replacement parts for a warranty claim, they invoice you for the parts shipped. If the faulty parts are not returned in 15 days, Dell then considers the invoice as a billable invoice (ie. you owe them the invoice amount).

Sounds like luketrot got the CS rep to believe he had/has parts coming from tech, so the CS rep would issue a return call tag and asssociated credit. I don't see how this is reducing the cost of his/her system, since Dell simply credits the invoice balance due, not the original charge to the owners credit card.

How is the cooling system set up on this pc? Would it happen to have a 120mm front intake & a 120mm rear exhaust?
I want a quiet system! hehe

Single temperature controlled 92mm fan in the rear, sucking air off the CPU through a duct. There is also a fan in the PS. Very, very quiet.

Must be quiet with only one fan.
I guess the question now is, when one hooks up a 9700 Pro, is that single fan going to be sufficient to cool the innards?

I'm using a 9700 Pro right now with no problems with my 2.8C. It's loaded with a 10K RPM SATA drive and a 7200 RPM drive, 2 optical drives as well, no power or heat issues.

Today I popped for the 2.8 with an estimated ship date of Sep 10. What's everyone doing with the installed memory? The 512 options at Crucial are:

512 stick
$116 - 3200 ECC
$114 - 2700 ECC
$95 -- 3200 non ECC
$87 -- 2700 non ECC

The difference between the (2 sticks of ) first and last option is ($232-174=) $56.

Would anyone recommend getting an identical stick to match the installed 128 ECC and adding it with 2 sticks of Crucial ECC? Other options I'm thinking about are 2 sticks of the 3200 ECC or 2 sticks of 2700 non ECC. Any comments or suggestions would help me. Thanks guys and dolls.

alrockey:

having gone through this issue, recently, I'd suggest you go with PC3200 DDR400; you have a processor that passes data at quad your memory path, you want the fastest memory that works. Dell/Intel's bios is tamed for stability (afterall, this is a server). Plus, they haven't provided cooling to tolerate overtweaking and therefore no choices for it in the BIOS. Finally, the cost of said modules are within a gentle squeeze of PC2700. As Olliebg states, his 1G of Crucial operates his machin-o nicely. I doubt that he'll not keep his system.

I also decided to go with Crucial's 3200 despite its CL3; unless you can overclock this system, you'll never need faster memory. And, given the quietness/and/or absence of fan buzz, I wouldn't ever sacrifice that for tweaking more speed out of my memory; my choice.

Finally, if you opt for 512M as an initial complement of RAM, decide on complementary RAM that won't negatively effect your Dual Channel performance. Crucial, afterall is Micron, (although they produced their first PC3200 with Samsung chips) and if you order modules subsequently, your chance of getting them with similar characteristics is very high. Those issues all contribute to good Dual Channel performance, if you're not going to do a total population of your memory slots at once.

That's darned impressive...I could sell my Lian Li, motherboard & 2.53 processor & almost have enough to get this!

Well, I opted to get crucial (4) sticks of 256 Meg DDR PC3200 ? CL=3 ? Non-parity ? 5ns ? 2.5V ? 32Meg x 64

I heard someplace that all 4 slots filled will run faster then just 2. But, if that isn't the case then I will most likly have 2 128 Meg Dell Ram stick up for grabs.

I will let everyone know what I find out (sppeds) for stock and 4X and 2X...

I would say go with 2 x 512MB Crucial PC3200 non-ECC. You may also want to consider buying the Crucial at Newegg because there's no sales tax (unless your in California) and is priced about the same.

For those of you that have received your systems in the last few days, is Dell still substituting DDR400 memory for the DDR333 that's suppose to come with the basic configuration???

-WoW - Now they have a 3.2 for the same price as the 2.8 I just ordered. Gotta cancel that order and get the family bragging right CPU.

How much of a performance increase would I get if I went from my rig to the 3.2G setup? Would it be that noticeable?
