Even after adding $19.90 tax for me, I think it would be hard to build one at that price - the processor 2.8P4 will cost about $170 alone at newegg...
HOWEVER, it has been cheaper - down to about 270 for the same configuration.... You could wait a long time before that price ever reappears. I'd say it's
warm enough. Got one in my cart right now....

case ~50 (but kinda useless)

total: 260 dollars.

not going to do it. not hot enough for me (biting my lip)

I hope they do this around xmas. My two daughters need a computer each so they can do their own thing with out sharing. at that price it would be a great xmas present.

The link is a little funky but the deal seems to still be good.

When you add it to the cart it comes up at $548

Make sure you only have 128 megs of ram and you take the warrenty down to 1 year. Also the processor should be the 50% off 2.8 P4.

You didn't include the motherboard?

You would be hard pressed to find a case and powersupply of this quality for $100. It is really a nice design. Here is how I figured it when I bought it.

Case/PS=$98
Processor=$181
Ram(eBay)=$25
Hardrive=$57
Motherboard=$129
Floppy Drive=$10.99
CD Rom=$13.99
Video Card=$33

Total = $561.98 from newegg after you sell the RAM on eBay. The supplied video card works OK as long as you don't play games(which MANY users do not) but if it is useless to you(I will save it so I can have a PCI card in case of a bad video card bios flash), CDROM and floppy drive are useless(I will use mine) your cost is now ~$504.00.

$298 vs. $504 seems pretty hot to me, $561.98 vs. $298 is very hot.

Just my .02 cents. GP

And he didnt take into account that this a nearly SILENT system. You'd need a highend Antec or Enermax case to even approach the quality of this system .. so add another $30 or so a good Antec BQE case on top of the $50. These SC400's make virtually no noise....important consideration if you want an HTPC or have the thing on 24/7 like I do.

In his defense though you can get a P4 2.8 w/800 FSB mobo combo at Frys for $150 sometimes....but it is a cheapo ECS mobo ... no where near the quality of this Intel mobo on the Dell.

But ultimately you have to give some points for the intangible here.....the system is beautifully built and very high quality all the way around ... and Dell has pretty decent repair policy. No matter how much I love building systems...it is always nice to do one of these Dell deals for clients.

That is also a pretty good point. Unless you want to be the tech support for a "friend" this deal is very attractive to a lot of people. The box is very well built, decent to look at, nearlly silent with a passive video card and you personally don't have to support it if it breaks(not a big deal for many here, but a deal for some).

While it could be argued that often Dell products are overpriced and underpowered, Dell servers (specifically, these mentioned in this thread) do not number in the aforementioned grouping. These machines are well constructed, and made of high quality components. Example, the motherboard (which as previously mentioned by nolovenohope was devoid from the above rather inane "price assessment"), for example, is manufactured by Intel themselves, solely for Dell, and employs the 875P chipset.

As many others have attested to, these servers also run rather quiet.

At this price, this server overall touts a very commendable price-performance ratio. For those in the market for an entry level server, this meets that need quite well. For those looking to resell the parts for scrap on a to-be-unnamed-auction-site, perhaps look elsewhere.

Is the power supply good enough if I add a Radeon 9800XT with Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer rev 3? Thanks.

Anyone who got in on this deal & does not want to keep their 128 MB RAM Stick, I'd be interested in buying it from you.

Please PM me if interested.

You may be able to even sell it back to Dell but I think they've gotten stricter on their rules of returns on systems.

btw: I have this system back when they had the 3.2 P4 for just over $500 after rebates & coupon.

I'm running it with a 9800 non-pro overclocked to a Pro & a VGA Cooler & a Hauppage MCE 250 TV tuner card as well as a Firewire card with the stock Power Supply & 160 GB Dual Hard drives, no porblems what so ever.

1GB of DDR 400 as well.

The RAM I'm asking for is for another system.
