Sorry for such a newbie question, but these deals involve ordering the Dell server with out an operating system.

Where are you guys getting your OS? or are you using an OS from an existing machine, r using Linix or Warez?

I was thinking on using an SC sever as my desktop PC, but I don't want to mess around with illegitimate OSes. Any suggestons on a MS OS deal?

Thanks for tolerating such a basic question

I ordered one of the PowerEdge 600 deal a few months ago. RedHat 9.1 installs on it without any prob. ( The machine is also certified by Dell for RH9.1 ) I think most people ( here ) buying the 400SC are converting them to workstations and installing regular WinXP. It works, but not supported by Dell.

Where are you getting Redhat 9.1? (Its 9.0)

I actually got in on the deal last week for $324 after rebate with 2.4/HT
Finished up installing XP on it last night and so far its VERY nice!

I think most people are using an existing copy of Win2k or XP on this Machine rich644, and don't care about the legality of it. I'm not advocating that, but that's probably what is happening.

As for the barebones aspect. If you happen to have a good video card and sound card laying around this machine isn't so barebones and makes a great desktop, not server.

No offense but if you're gonna rip a deal from SlickDeals at least give them credit. My friend Mavtech is the guy who posted this there on 12/10...

This system is comparable to a Dimension 8300 and is more of a high end desktop rather then a server. Dell advertises this as a server so there are additional features that isn't officially supported. The motherboard is based on the 875P chipset, has SATA, 8x AGP, integrated audio, and supports 800FSB CPUs. Drivers for the advanced features can be found at Intel. It has a nice clamshell case design. Also works with non-ECC memory. [Unofficial FAQ, pics]

The power supply is 250W but Dell rates it conservatively. 250W is equivalent to ~350W. There is alot of talk on the Dell forums regarding power supplies.

12/11 Update: They are no longer offering the free pda or digicam.

I've got 3 of these and they are very sweet and very fast.

What I like about these is that I know exactly what is in each one of them because I put most of it there.

For less than a $1000, one of my 400SC's has 1024mb of 3200 mem RAM, 200GB HD, 40gb HD, 4x DVD +/_ R/RW, 9800 Pro, 7.1 Audio, and 7 card reader/USB 2.0/1394 front mounted. Dell wants nearly $2M for the same specs.

I was able to get 5ea. legitimate lic. for WinXP Pro disks last year through a MS promotion for $10 each.

Watch this forum for great deals and one can be very happy with the results. It does take work and time though.

I have configured 6 400SC for Customers this year as Linux Servers, I can not beat the price on these units, I can not build them cheaper.

Nice Config nasttcar, sweet setup for the money...

There have been more variations of sweet deals on the PE400 SC than there is tea in China. Just wait five minutes ...reminds me of the weather in Texas. Why do you think nasttcar got three?

Last September there was an eight hour window where you could upgrade to the 3.2 GHz CPU for free in combination with a coupon and a rebate. I refrained from ordering the day before when one deal cut off at midnight and instead of buyer's remorse the next day ...the deal got hotter! Be patient.

If anyone wants to sell their 128MB stick of ECC 400MHz CL3 DDR from this system, PM me. I just got mine and want 3 more sticks of RAM to give me 512MB total.

BTW, nice system. Very quiet, and it looks like the SATA is now RAID.

Where are you seeing SATA at all? I bought one of these last month and didn't notice any mention of SATA. I just went to the Dell site and didn't fine any mention of SATA there either.
