The board has sata built in. This is a good deal if you already own XP and a few of the basics that go along with a home system like a good video card. Last week's Dell 4600(?) for $449 deal was probably a better if you don't have the rest of the stuff to complete the PC.

When I post that deal on Slick, you got a free PDA or camera. I ordered in time to take advantage of that. I'll sell the PDA to make up more on the server. So, I'll end up paying like $225 for it. Can't beat it. I needed that server to replace the PIII 500 Win2000 server box. I have a free full version of Small Business Server 2003 on the way to put on my new 400SC.

Oops, sorry for the blank post!!!

So, the free CPU upgrade ends today, so does the 50% off HD upgrade. Is it worth it to wait and see what their next deal is on the 400SC or should I jump on it now? Any thoughts?

Thanks!!!

How bad do you need a computer? And how little money do you have? Just my 2 cents.

So for $50 more you can get the 600c with the P4 2.4ghz, and 256mb ddr, sdram and NO MIR to deal with, wouldn't you rather buy the faster processor and more ram ??? Can somebody tell me why the 600c isn't a better deal ?

Thanks

Because the 400sc is intel 875 chipset and compatible with 533Mhz and 800Mhz processors (hyperthreaded). There`s built in 8X AGP, 2 channel S-ATA, 6 USB 2.0 ports, 10/100/1000 ethernet, 4 PCI slots (with both 5.0v and 3.3v universal support), ADI 198x audio, and loads of other features. The 400sc supports wide range of memory choice but the 600sc only used registed memory. And the 600sc don't has all of these features.
You can use the 400sc as the high end gamer PC.

If you need the PC then go for it now. If you see the better deal tomorrow then cancel this one.

I have to buy a cheap amd xp processor which will probably run me $50 or so. Maybe I should just buy this instead and give my old 1700 xp to the other box I was putting together. Hmmm.

anyone know how this deal ranks on the scale of hot deals? I was looking at some past 400sc dell deals and they weren't offering p4 upgrades. or maybe i wasn't looking enough. and i'm not talking about comparisons with price mistakes. I thought this was pretty hot.

I got in the last deal which is the same price but with the free palm or camera. This deal is not bad with P4 2.26 for $299 after rebate. If you really need it then go for it. This deal will expired tonight. If you see better deal tomorrow then cancel this one.

Do you have to use ECC memory or can you use any memory? This is the Intel 875P chipset so I think it supports both right?
Thanks.

I'm pretty sure I'll order this, but has anyone found affordable RAM that will work in it? I need a box with 2GB RAM, so I'd need 512+ sticks or larger. Crucial only lists ECC for this server, which would cost ~$400.

Good find BTW, I decided not to do this deal last X-Mas, and regretted it later. IIRC, it was pretty much the same price.

OK, I'm in. I'm upgrading to the 2.8 P4 for an additional $199. I know that I could do better buying the CPU separately, but I don't want to mess with it. Still, $499 for an 800mhz 2.8 P4 isn't too bad. Like a couple of you said, I can cancel if they have a better deal tomorrow. Does anyone know if AmEx will BVG this is Dell comes out with a better deal? I should also be able to part with my stick of 128 ECC if someone wants it. Thanks all!

Check out the 400SC faq as linked to above in this thread, they have a listing of user-verified RAM. They have an entire forum devoted to this model, lots of info there.

I just picked one up for use as a family PC (2.26 GHz). It's nice and quiet, only a single fan in the system and it's thermally controlled. The loudest component in the system by far is the CD-Rom when it spins up.

Thx Sludge. I just went for it. I just need to scare up some supported RAM now.

The SC400 FAQ is wrong in one regard. I have 2 systems... a P4 3.2 & a 3.0.
Corsair XMS3200 DDR will not boot in EITHER!

Buffalo DDR (CH-5/ 256x2) was my choice for the 3.0.
I have 4 sticks of Dell's Micron (128mb/ECC) in the 3.2.

I've only posted verified information to the FAQ: what you see listed is what I've been personally assured works by other 400SC owners.

Yes, I'm currently running some ANCIENT Crucial PC2100 (2x 256MB) DDR RAM in a 400SC.

Hmm. I am trying to run some Kingston "kvr266x72rc25l/512"
Which is PC2100 512MB ECC ram and it doesn't work at all.
All it does is beep at me.

Edit: OllieB I just got your email.

One type of RAM I can confirm works in the 400SC is Crucial PC3200. I just put 256 in one the other night. Everything worked great!

When I checked the crucial website, it says you need to install the ram in pairs. I take it that this is not true?
