I love these boxes so much... silent, stylish, and very capable... don't own one yet but I've bought many for others when they decided to ask for PC-buying help...

I'd say this is a warm deal, though, since they are so often offered at the $350 mark... the "hot" sweet-spot for me would be in the ~$300-or-less-AR ballpark ($274AR is the cheapest they've been in recent memory)...

I was waiting for this to drop for a linux box I wanted to make. It is cheaper than building my own--even using OEM parts.

Wish it was the 3.2ghz model though. I picked up my first 400sc as the 3.2ghz for around ~280 after all was said and done.

so these things are pretty quiet? being the server model i thought that they might not be as worried about dampening the sound.

The stock system is silent (like, is this thing dead silent). Add your own video card w/ fan and HD, and I'd say it's still quiet, but I did notice that HD reading/writing is more noticable than my old Antec case though. Must be the big vent holes up front...

Buddy of mine at work got one of these systems for himself, says its dead quiet. He drop in two 512mb Crucial DDR3200 sticks from newegg.com and says its working great.

Honestly, the 400sc is the best designed system I've ever worked with.

Is it silent?
Yes I never hear mine unless I doing something super intensive like video encoding or playing UT etc. Even then it is not obnoxious. I am using a 9600pro in there (heatsink model) so I don't even have to worry about a video fan causing noise. (does Dell have some proprietary fan control thing for the heatsink on the processor or is this a new intel goody?)

All the drives have attachable rails. Drives slide in and out of the case easily.

PCI cards are attached using screwless plastic snapons that securely attach everything to the case and MB.

The case opens like a clamshell as well. Pleasure to work in.

Just add your own, Dell would overcharge you anyway.

I just received mine last week and so far so good.
This is what I have added so far:
3-128mb sticks of Micron DDR ECC
2-250GB Maxtor hd's
Lite-On DVD/CDRW Combo
Pioneer 8X DVD+/-RW
ATI Radeon 8500 All in Wonder DV.

I was going to use this as a server but decided to use it as a workstation since it was a nice and cheap upgrade to my XP2100. The system is so much more quieter than my previous sytem. The only bad thing I have to say is that I could not install my Sony DRU 510A due to Sony's larger than normal faceplate which is why I bought the Pioneer Burner.
I upgraded the Hard Drive, added one more, removed the stock video card, and also removed the Cd-Rom. This is probably the best desktop system I've owned so far. I think I'm going to get one of these for my mom and my wife.

i love my poweredge 400sc with 3.2ghz. i added all my best parts to it. 1GB RAM, dual 200GB drives, 9800pro, etc etc.

now i wish dell would upgrade their sc line with the latest intel 915/925 board and the processors. that'd be hot if i can use pci express cards on a cheap box. the 8400 now is around 700-900 dollars...

will the regular non-ECC RAM works?
and, if they do work, since the 128 MB that's included is an ECC, would they work together?

Sorry about that, he bought non-ECC RAM. The eggs gone wild sale ram.

Here is the FAQ on the 400SC Server

He is running WinXP pro sp1 fine on it.

The 400SC servers I have seen have high speed 120mm fans that make the computers fairly loud. The ones I'm talking about are about a year old.

These have a single 120mm fan sitting over the cpu using a pipe. Extremely quiet.

with the 2.8, they'll be pretty damn well silent. The 3.2's use a slightly diff fan, but that makes it the 2nd quietest computer I've owned. The only thing I can hear is the Raptor writing/reading
