The one thing I don't like about this system is that it does have IDE drives on it. I wish we could get some Cheetahs for that price... And because of the extreme costs of IDE RAID controllers, I guess software RAID is the best option. Ohh well.....

What???

First of all, this price is quite low. So low, in fact, that I don't know how they do it... You expect to get SCSI at this price level?
Secondly, IDE RAID controllers are extremelly expensive? How so?
Thirdly, I believe you get one for free with the machine...

I believe you can configure 2 or more harddrives, you will get a FREE RAID card.

Sounds good, however, the add in RAID card is $299. There is a choice further down about the drive configuration. You can set the drives in a RAID set, but this is with the add in card. If you don't add the card, you'll need to supply one or use software mirroring that is in the operating system. Nice price for this server though...

Anyone know if this thing has a SOUND CARD? I see it has onboard LAN and video.

Any links to details on the motherboard?

Anyone know if this thing has a SOUND CARD?

Servers don't have sound...hence the name server and not workstation. You can find tech specs on the Dell website. This system does not have an agp slot either. You would need a PCI video card if you don't want to use the onboard video.

How picky is Dell about the buyer actually being a small business? The pricing looks good, even though I'm using my Dell Home account. I just had to fill in the business name field. I'm concerned about getting boned on the rebate, though. Any clues?

People buy from Small Business all the time. Just put your name in for the business name. I bought a monitor from SB with no problems.

Dell's not picky at all about your business name. Nor is Office Depot. My business name abbreviated is IWHF which stands for:
Ice Water in Hell Foundation

Ok, so I'm thinking about getting one. Here's a question-the 1400SC doesn't have hot-swap bays (which is fine). Their documentation is a little slim, and I was wondering if anyone has actually seen these cases to know how much room is inside, etc. Also, the 1500SC has 6 hot-swap bays. I know it takes 1" 10,000RPM SCSI drives. Does anyone know where I can get Dell drive bays to put new drives in? I can get them a LOT cheaper through Pricewatch than I can at Dell.

Cheap way to get a budget computer. PowerEdge 500SC server with celeron 1.2GHz, 128MB, 80GB + Free 2nd 80GB, 1yr warranty, CD-ROM, NIC for $589 - $100 instant off - 15% off - $100 rebate = $316 shipped free! At the main page, click on "Astonishing low prices on servers" >> Customize It under 500SC >> choose 80GB, free 2nd 80GB. Or get 2x40GB for about $40 less.

I try to get 500SC with free 2nd 80G HD, but I can only see one option that is 2nd 40G HD..
Am I miss somthing?

Thanks bit, it's hot..

Btw, I can use the PCI sound card on those MB, is it right?

I have seen the specs, but like I said, I was looking for someone with actual experience with this case, that could give me a feel for how much room there really is, how well things fit, etc.

Remember that anything you add has another 15% taken off of it, so go crazy if you really want.

If you add 2 80GB harddrives, you get the drives for ~23 cents/GB. EXCELLENT.
If you add 2 120GB harddrives, you get the drives for ~98 cents/GC. SUCK SUCK (although better than what I paid).

I would recommend to anyone getting this to get it, sell what you don't want, and upgrade what you do. My buddy bought this for JUST THE MOBO. He ended up paying $50 to take everything after rebate and selling everything else elsewhere.
two 80GB drives = $140
server case = $70
Celly 1.2GHz = $60

It's now sitting in an old sub box with a Raidmax ps for $16 (some other thread on here).

Solid server. I'd recommend.

Just to let you know what I've seen on higher end PowerEdge systems. For this to have RAID capabilities, you'll need to purchase an upgrade kit. Onboard RAID will have the battery pack, controller insert, etc. That's something more for Dell to sell and it's EXTREMELY expensive. There are some places that you can pick up cheap IDE RAID controllers and I've seen some system pulls as low as $18...there may be even cheaper ones. It's up to you if you want to take a chance with one of those.

I do realize that SCSI would be very expensive, but I like the idea of getting some Cheetahs thrown into a deal like this on a server class machine. I'm kind of sad that they would screw a server over by putting a celly in it.

just wait until your rebate check turns up addressed to IWHF..dell small biz rebates are usually adress to the biz name...you can change it by bugging the rebate center and faxing them the rebate form again. To stay clear of all this use your name as the company name

What I found interesting was the typo in the description for the 350 server:
Upgrade to a PE350,1.0GHz,PIII,256K at a Celeron 850GHz price Great Upgrade

How much do those celeron 850Ghz processors cost ? Do they run hot ?

Does anyone think Dell will not ship out this system? I ordered this system Thursday of last week. I received my first confirmation email but no email with a date if when it was expected to be shipped. I also have not been charged yet for this system (which makes sense since it has not been shipped yet). What is the longest Dell has taken to give a ship date for a system from the Small Business section?

Unless there was some lead time, there is no reason they wouldn't ship it out. This is a Dell advertised sale, not a pricing mistake, so it's 100% legit.

Awesome...

My friend wanted me to build a computer for his lil' sister for $500. They're gonna flip when they see that it's a Dell server. Plus, I'll throw in a 20gb hard drive I have here and I get 2 80gbs.. nice..

Thanks.
