My roommate's S330 came in today (he selected overnight... the bastard!!), and my first impression is that it's pretty big. My brother's got a Fuji Finepix 40i, and that's sorta been my standard for a truly small camera. I knew the Canon would be thicker, but I wasn't expecting it to be so thick. My other roommate said he'd buy whichever one I decided not to keep, so I've got some thinking to do. Worse case, I'll have one of my friend's in asia grab a Fuji Finepix 50i.

Edit: Quick update. MY roommate just came by and showed me his LCD... it's got 2 freaking bad pixels!!! BWAHAHAHA!!!! One's stuck on red and the other's stuck on blue.

The LCD display at the back is very grainy... I'm not used to it. It's not the worst I've seen (earlier Kodak models), but it is far from clear. I'm more used to my Olympus which has spectacular LCDs. It could be grainy because of the darkness I think, but when I compared it with my Oly, the oly came out clear. After you take pictures though, the display is clear and accurate. But while viewing through the LCD, leaves a lot more to be desired. The good news though is that it can probably be fixed via firmware upgrade (I think).

The grainy look is due to the poor lighting. I was taking photos in my house and the darker the room, the more grainy the lcd looked. The lcd shows things much darker than the human eye sees. Good news is that all pictures I took turned out fine. The flash is more than adequate for indoor shots.

For those of you complaining about the S330 size, you guys must have some small hands. Maybe the S200 is a better choice for the petite Anandtech crowd.

agree. and i don't find a roomate/friend having stuck pixels funny either
i remember the s300 going on clearance @ SAM'S and it's not THAT big... imo it's smaller than the s10 which is plenty small for me most times--but that's my opinion also

No kidding about the stuck pixels.. they suck. My S330 has a stuck green pixel and it is annoying, though not enough to diminish my enjoyment of the new camera.

Some comments now that I've had more time to play with the S330.
* LCD noise - the behavior is the same as with the S110-- under low light, the LCD is very noisy and looks like crap until you take the picture. I think it is due entirely to the difference between a real-time image and a photo where the shutter is open for a longer period of time.
* Themes and Sounds - I miss the quiet beep from the S110. The speaker volume on the S330 does not seem to go low enough (it goes: off, not quiet, loud, louder, really loud, loudest). The nature and techie themes are silly, but it is nice that you can mix and match the startup image and sounds effects. The zoom lens seems much louder than the one on the S110.
* Buttons - Switching from the S110 took getting used to, but it is an improvement. You can delete images with one press from each thumb. Image zoom/pan is fantastic.
* Menus - The ability to turn off options like digital zoom, AI autofocus, and auto-ISO is very welcome. Plus the new AF and Exposure locks make this great for anyone who wants a little more control.
* The viewfinder still shows a noticably different picture than the LCD, which is unfortunate.
* Recording - I'm not likely to use the voice memos. And I don't plan to record many 4 second movies either. But the sound is decent and definately works if you don't have a computer or TV handy.

The jury is still out on the battery life and improved flash, but overall I am glad I upgraded. I had the $280 S110 from last fall's OfficeMax deal and got six good months out of it. For $60 more, this was well worth the upgrade, even though it is still a 2.1M camera. Way to go, Canon!

question:
1/ How do you feel about the side & weight between the S110 vs S330?

2/ and do you need the extra zoom?

please let us know
Thanks

How long should it take between the moment I press the button and the time it flashes and captures the image? It seemed to take 2-3 seconds last night when I was playing around with the camera. My two year old son will have to learn how to hold a pose if its going to take this long each time.

That's one thing which sucks about my $169 Kodak DX3700, it takes a good 2-3 seconds before the picture is taken!

That's the way digital cameras work... hold the shutter down half way for auto focus to come, and then finish pushing all of the way down and the picture is taken instantly. if you just push the button all of the way down first, your shots will likely come out blurred as you will have moved by the time it focuses and takes the pic.

unclebud: I'm just jealous because he ordered with overnight-delivery and I used ground, so he got his first. I'm surprised these LCD's have bad pixels. I mean, those screens are tiny. I don't know what the resolution is, but 2 bad pixels seems like a fairly high percentage. Production problems? I've got 3 bad pixels on my computer LCD, but that's 3 out of 1600x1200 pixels...

Anyways, I'm not saying the camera is too big to use or be useful. But, compared to some of the other cameras out there, it's bloated. It's like cell phones. I've got a Motorola Timeport, and when I first got it, it was small, compared to my old Nokia. But then my brother got one of the newer motorola's that was about half the size of mine. It's all relative.

The S330's just thick. I really think the ideal shape of a digi-cam is the Fuji Finepix 40i/50i. The Minolta Dimage X is pretty nice, too. Of course, the image quality of those aren't that great. I remember the first time I saw my picture from the 40i, and I looked FAT!!! And I'm 5'10"/145lbs. There seemed to be a problem with it stretching the image along the horizontal plane.

Hey,

Satori: dont worry about it we all know ya just jealous.

Anyway I just posted this as a possible hot deal from compusa. And thought I should add it here too.

Just received this in the email.

Compusa ad 4/14-4/20 "sorry bout the previous link"

I looked through it and found this PNY compact flash 256mb for 79.99 after saving

I have no idea how good this card is so if anyone can google and find out more about this compact flash card by PNY/rebadged Compusa. That would be nice.
Btw, you got to check online to see whether your local compusa have this item instock or not inorder to score it.

PRINT THE AD OUT!!!!!!!!!!!

This is among the first few hot deal that I posted so please spare me.

Now if someone could find us a good deal on a 1900mh battery for the S330 that would be sweet.

BTW my S330 is scheduled to ship on 5/22. Thats 42 days and counting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey all,

I was wondering with the S330 my main concern is whether the camera is pocketable. Currently I have an Olympus C700UZ (10x optical) and this thing is AWKWARD! Especially with the lens that sticks out about an inch. It's difficult to take places and whats the point of a camera if you can't take it places right? So, I think i'm going to fleabay my current digicam and get either the S330 or S200. I will fork over the extra 30 or so bucks so that I get a better camera overall...but my question is it worth it. And is it still as pocketable as the S110-S200s...

Don't sell your c-700... it's a much, MUCH better camera then the smaller canon cams... IF you know how to use the manual controls.

I wouldn't be able to live without being able to select exposer, ISO, shutter speed, and aperture value. Throw in the 10x zoom, and I'm in love. The pictures will be consistantly better with the c-700 then with the canon s200-330.

If you are looking for a point and shoot, go with the little Canons... for a real fully customizable cam, go olympus.

yay i got mine shipped overnight and it came yesterday.. i was afraid it wasnt going to come in time..
s330 = pretty hefty but with a slip case and a cargo pocket its definetly portable.. its only like 2-3 ounces more guys!
I do have 1 red stuck pixel to the side, but i barely use the viewfinder anyhoo.
pictures are great, outdoor is barely washed but totally doable, and the stitch asist and software roxxors
i personally love it and would definetly pay the 30$ more for an extra zoom and the microphone..
now to go to frys for a 128mb card

as far as pocketability, have to be the judge oneself (people have small hands, people might have small pockets). telling you that when i go back, it's going with me AGAIN, the oly is staying @ home
fact that that lens closes up over it is MIGHTY handy
but i can tell people that last week i bought an oly 3000 (Z?) for like $180/$190. when i tell my friends (to see if they were interested, and wanting to get one for themselves), they are ALL were like "so you gonna sell the s10 then? let me buy it!" i'm like "dude, i ain't selling it for less than the $150 i paid for it..." they interuppt saying "that's cool! i can get you the money friday!" i guess it's all about what one wants to do with the cam--coworkers fronted on the oly 460 for $129, but jumped on the 3200 for $65. then others fronted on the 3200 and bought a open-box sony mavica 95(?) i found them for $270, because they didn't want to have to install anything on the computer to use the camera
somebody come on and post how to overclock these cams lol--anandtechers are too much heeheehee
