I have a PSU that I took out of my Dell that is whisper quiet! I mean REALLY super quiet. I want to replace my Ultra Power Supply that is in my PC now, but the main connector on the Dell PSU is 24 pin, and my Asus mobo takes a 20 pin. Is there an adapter I can use from the 24 pin to the 20 pin mobo connection? I know they make 20 to 24 pin ones...

Yes there are adapters that go 24 to 20.

If there is room, just let the 4 extra ports on the gang plug hang off the end of the board connection. The latch should clip on. The orange wires are at the end, those are the ones that will hang off.

EDIT: Make sure the Dell is ATX standard pin-outs. It prolly is but do check.

If it was bought any time in the last 5 years then it's standard pinouts.

Yes, as G-Y said, it is better to let the extra 4 pins hang over the end of the connector if there is room there - I do it on mine. Actually it is one wire of each color (red, orange, yellow, black) that hangs off, the mass of orange wires should be inside and against the end of the mobo connector - the connector will fit only one way, so not much chance of error w/o forcing. And the latch likely won't latch unless the PSU connector is one of the 20+4 types with the wide latch, in which case it has its own adapter... Friction should keep it in place OK, but I use a ribbon of hot-glue for insurance. Try to avoid adapters in high current lines.

If it is 24-pin, it is a standard pinout. They stopped those shenanigans a while ago.

Thank you for all the responses, and for not calling me a stupid n00b I'm gonna do it!

After that, my optical drive spinning will be the loudest thing in my system.
