6GB DDR2

I'm confused about the memory capacity on these Inspirons. I've read elsewhere that max. memory is 4GB, but clearly that is not the case here, as I see the 6GB systems on the Dell Outlet site. Do more recent Inspiron 530 models have higher capacity? Is there any way to differentiate? Can they be upgrade to 8GB?

Thanks for the suggestion... I'm seriously considering one of these refurbs now..

4gb for standard 32bit vista, but 64bit vista supports more memory. still, i think that's an overkill.

My understanding was that Inspiron motherboards were a limiting factor for memory capacity -- I am not so concerned with the Vista 32-bit limit, although thank you for pointing it out.
(I'm looking to set up a VM t est system, which is why significant memory is needed)

no, the motherboards are not the limiting factor. it's the 32/64bit OS that decides that.

Actually, there is/was a bios limitation for a long while. I think for most of the PC's they've not updated the documentation but with the latest bios releases and a 64bit OS you can see 8GB of ram. You'll have to search to see which models have what limitations as it can change at any time.

The Inspiron 530 can come with one of two slightly different motherboards. When ordered with a quad core cpu, they will come with the better board which supports 8GB (4x2GB). These that are coming with 6GB installed of course come with the better board, and support 8GB.

BUT, you need 64bit Windows (Vista) to recognize more than 4GB of memory. These systems with 6GB installed come with Vista Home Prem 64bit. There may be some with less than 6GB that come with Vista 64bit, and if so, it'll say in the detailed specifications, "64-bit Operating System," or something like that.
