I was pretty proud of my hot deals ninjitzu & used my 15% off coupon to get a dell studio 1555 with c2duo, 4gigs of ram, vista64 with windows 7 upgrade, and, the best of all, a 1080p screen. All for $509 ($549 after tax).

It shipped really fast, ordered on thurs, got it today, but when it powered up the screen didn't look right. I lwent to personalize the screen and it came up with 1366x768.

I keep getting I keep getting transferred around by indians who have no freaking clue what screen resolution means and inevitably end up sending me to technical support, which tells me to call back in 2-3 hours because their computers are down.

Thing is, while the 'order acknowledged' email says 1080p in it, the order confirmation page they gave me after the unit shipped doesn't mention it, meaning it probably isn't in their system.

And the frustration builds.

Checking this Dell Studio 1555 configuration page.. Link

It shows that the 1080p screen cost an additional $75, for a total of $674, not $599 (original starting price). Check your configuration order sheet that comes with the Dell and see what was installed/ordered.

He bought from Dell Outlet (so it was an already built laptop, not one he configured himself).

Well then why don't you wait and call back in 2-3 hours?

It's an outlet laptop. It was 599, stocked (core2 duo, 4 gigs, vista 64, 320 hd, & 1080p), and then I had a 15% coupon to take it down to $509. The problem is, the product description I ordered is now gone, since they're unique on the outlet page. I only have the "order acknowledged" email I got right after purchase to back me up. I don't think it's in their system, since it's not mentioned in the order confirmation page that my "order shipped" email sent me to. Though, it doesn't mention the resolution at all on that page.

Have you tried their chat? They seem a bit more responsive than some of the other dell techs. You need to tell them that the computer you received is incorrect, and if need be, ask to be transferred to a native english speaking tech.

Don't distance selling laws protect you? Can you not return it within X days, no questions asked.

Return it and try again...

Edit: Alternatively if you like it, see if you can get them to knock off some money ($50?), or upgrade your warranty and keep it...

Go to http://support.dell.com

Select "Warranty Status" on the left

Click on Original System Configuration

Enter your service tag

Hopefully you can find the part code for your display and hopefully it's the one for the 1080p panel so you can dispute their records.

You bought from the outlet right? They tend to do these things.

Well, the chat guy had it in the system as 1080p. He remoted in, confirmed it was 1366x768, reinstalled the graphics drivers. It was still 1366x768. He said that he'll send a fedex box to pick it up and replace the LCD...

I asked if they do this for outlet items & he was unsure. His system was partially down, so he said he couldn't check. Hopefully he knows what he's talking about.

In my experience, Dell support is awesome. You might be able to get them to send a tech to replace it at your house.

Most of my experience is with Dell Business support, which has always been excellent. Outlet products carry the same warranty as new products, and from everything I've read and experienced myself, receive first-tier service.

I think the Studio laptops fall under their "Home" line (a.k.a, not as stellar support). Whether this distinction makes any difference given the situation I'm not sure. I'm not surprised that they're fixing it, but I am a bit surprised that they're swapping out the panel instead of trying to find you a different laptop. Probably better for you if this one is configured just how you want it.

Sounds nice!

Make sure to update when you get it back.

Wow, that sucks, I was told that only the e6500's had that resolution. I spent about $200 more than I should have.

EDIT: Should I return my laptop? I'll be downgrading the processor and ram, but I'll get 64-bit windows, blu-ray, better graphics card, and a larger hard drive for $200 less.

I would go from a latitude e6500 to a studio 15. I bought it last week so I need to make a decision quick.

Good, I'm glad the chat worked out for you. I bet that computer was returned because it didn't have 1080p, dell outlet looked at it and said it operated fine and put it up for sale as it was with the same original specs.

Tough choice, as I think that Latitude is probably a higher quality laptop. Is it your primary computer? What about battery? How important is the graphics and Blu-Ray? How much of a downgrade on the CPU? The RAM and HDD are pretty easily and cheaply remedied, and I think you can get a 64bit install disc for maybe $10 or so (possibly free or just cost of shipping even), of course you might wait if you qualified for the free Win7 upgrade.

I would go from a T9800 to a T9600, 4GB of ram (1 stick), to 4GB of ram (2 sticks), 32bit to 64bit, dvd burner to bluray burner, no finger print scanner, nvs160, to ATI 4570. 250GB to 500GB (both 7200rpm). Both 9 cell batteries.

I use my computer for motion graphics. I do photoshop work, and after effects work. I've worked with video files with resolutions of 5120x768, and 4080x768. I need power.
